Doesn't seem like it to me.

Do the Berkeley people even talk about ET anymore, or is it all about keeping the projects nuts and bolts working?

It's all about fast computers, optimizations, racking up credits, and other hardware and software stuff I don't understand.

A dummy like me can understand finding ET tho.

Maybe not. It's possible I just don't get what's going on.

Sure, I dig the magnificence of what distributed computing can do.

I'd appreciate it if this thread isn't killed right away. If people can talk about cats and drinking too much and other such stuff, can't a basic question about finding ET be asked?

Well, you've posted this in the Café, where I think we would admit that we enjoy being silly about all sorts of things (and are often quite good at it.)

If you look through the Seti@home science message board (in particular,) you will find lots of threads about directly relevant issues.

You can also look through the Seti@home staff blog message board -- So where's the science..? for example, which is an answer to some of what you are asking.

We'll never know if we almost found ET.

The only real news will be discovery.

Chicken Stacker......

Coming from the one who talks about cats, and drinking too much, and other such stuff......

I can only speak for myself.........
But I will respond.

Yes, it IS about finding ET..........
Always has been.
To paraphrase the movie..........."You had me at ET".....

The fast computers, opti apps, credits, and cats, are all just an end to the original means.
It keep us all occupied and distracted with other things whilst we do the real search in the background.

Sometimes I know it seems like some of us are only interested in fast computers and cats.....and opti appps.....and whiskey.......and....well, you get the picture.

But the only reason we really stick around, is somewhere, deep inside, we are really interested in the drudgery of the science.

And the hope and belief that we may actually find the signal some day, in between our obsessions with fast computers, opti apps, cats, and whiskey.

You are not a dummy, my friend....
Just another dreamer like the rest of us.....hoping to prove they are right.

When I was a lot younger I liked fast women. Now that I am older and married wife says Im only allowed fast computers. Whiskey makes me puke so just cheap beer for me. Will we catch ET some day? I hope so. So while we are trying to eaves drop on his phone home, Why cant we also be doing some real science at the same time?
There are many boards in here to satisfy any whim you desire. I read the technical news. and number crunching. I join in at the last person to post . beets give a caption and the coconut threads.
There are some pretty nice folks here , Hope you stick around to find out.

Taking a clue from your user name, Chicken Stacker, I guess you have a pretty good sense of humor, so your original question is likely tongue-in-cheek, or ironic at least. Or perhaps, your hear the low rumble of crunchers who: 1) don't have enough work; 2) can't connect; 3) don't know what (fill in the blank) means, or does, or something is doing a certain (wrong) way; etc.
These things might seem far afield from the purpose of this project, but they are valid concerns for those of us who really want the science to mean something.

For myself, and probably many others, we don't talk about whether we found or ever will find ET, because this is a long term project that may show something is out there, but may show that the likelihood of something being there is less than some theorists thought. With such a wide and fuzzy range of outcomes, is it any wonder that we here crunching for SETI@home talk about the concrete things we see and know, like downtime and processing problems?

Well said. Sometimes it is easy to forget that all those people grumbling about this or that little bug are still crunching like crazy while they grumble.

..and the question itself - Who or What is ET? ;-))

We are here to search for the possibility for its existence -
not to answer what it is - or in what way it will finally
give us a sign..

And with all this time it Does takes.. what should we talk about?
.. Its much better to talk about something, than to sit in our own
little corner of the world, just checking that the computer is ON. ;-D

But what about the aliens amongst us? No, I don't mean my last boss, or even the one before that. What if ET is here, hiding amongst us, in an observing capacity.

What if the idea of us finding ET made him/her/it nervous? What could they do, in a low key non-obvious way, to screw up the search for ET? Would they promote the use of GPUs, to tie up the servers with masses of traffic? Would they run a bunch of machines with ancient versions of BOINC?

Any ideas on how they would quietly kill, or at least cripple, this project?

And if the moderators remove this post, does that mean THEY are the aliens?

Some people believe ET's are already here. Personally, if I were an ET I would come to a place just like this to learn about humans and to keep a track of how close they're getting to discovering us. And with the added benefit of learning about our information technologies as they develop.

If I had to pinpoint an ET:
He would live in California.
He would be very knowledgeable of computers and networking.
He would post primarily in number crunching.
Last but not least, he would obviously be extremely intelligent.

I can think of several good candidates for an ET. :)
