Cosmological Catastrophes since I last posted(last night) have destroyed, in the interim, some 1000s of Intelligent Civilizations. Living amongst the Peoples of these Worlds were ETs of varying personality types. Some Cynical, some Enthusiastic, many In-Betweeners. Regardless, as I type, they are destroyed/dead. They are not Signal Makers anymore. I hope your crunching one day picks up a vestige of their struggles/accomplishments. But I doubt it.

As my computers CRUNCHED 7500 Classic WUs of approximately 34,000 cpu hours, I felt as I wrote above. I never bothered the community about my feelings during those years. Although in my profile then, I did express cynicism about the possiblity of no contact.

It's the end goal for me.

Realize of course (and I know you do) that this is the "sum of it parts" kind of adventure. Anything as freakin' complex as this is going to be a multi-part, multi-phased, multi-participant, multi-year deal (I ran out of multipliers but you get the picture).

As such, it is next to impossible to keep a constant fix on the end goal. It just seems too far away to most, if not all. So you need sign-posts to show you are making your way.

A faster machine means more.

A discussion board means more. Silly topics along side the serious ones means more (you and I are here aren't we?).

Each little part, taken only by it's one-sies (thank-you Jack Sparrow) seems to be lost in space. But always consider the forest just didn't get there by itself. Examining a single tree just tells you about a tree. Together however it and its neighbours are a pretty big *(#-ing deal (and thank-you Mr Vice President).

It's the forest of course that is the journey to the end goal. Ours is this complex mix that keeps shifting and changing but it never deviates in its overall true direction.

let's think of this from a different perspective.

Let's say the big one, (the BIG BIG ONE) gets announced. Ta-da! ET has called.

Then you will see some aimlessness! What the heck do I do now with something capable of computing at the rate I presently have at my finger-tips?!! Email and Youtube just don't need multiple thousands of GFLOPS to crank!

Hi I think searching for E.T. is like the lottery when you can only win if you buy a ticket. The E.T. search is the same we can only find E.T. if we search.

Astronomical searching is basically what this is. When a way is found to find ET, the signal location will be catalogued like any other cosmological item. Sky charts will be full of them. They will be designated in many ways depending on the signal characteristics. The major one being how advanced.

Much excitement when the first one is found. Honors, awards, and much fame. Later, when the sky charts are full, it will be like finding another sun, galaxy, etc.

Now if there is communication back and forth, that is a whole different can of worms. But, we know it will never be.

In the book Contact the Machine when finally operated, created a wormhole connection to the Earth. The Caretakers told Ellie this "contact"/connection would be used to destroy humans if they decided to be bad Spacers/Galactic-Universe Citizens. Of course The Caretaker/Ellie's Dad? said it in a more diplomatic way. In the book he didn't say "small steps, small steps" either.

Interesting it was a Day The Earth Stood Still warning. Except The Caretakers would not "burn to a cinder". Why waste a good Planet?

Anyways, besides The Warning or The Welcome(if you get your act together)the other revelations were Love, Pi, and The Circle. And it seemed to imply there might be a GOD after all. The beings who originally created and built the wormhole connections throughout The Galaxy and Universe had not been seen/heard from in Billions of years. And The Caretakers(the beings who met Ellie and the four other passengers in The Machine(yeah-Movie, just Ellie; Book, The Machine had 5 passengers), they had been doing their thing for millions of years.

I liked reading his other books Billions and Billions and Pale Blue Dot much better.
