I am the Skunk Whisperer!!!

Because I am (over) feeding migrant birds right now, the giant skunk we have named Odoriferous Rex has been stopping in regularly at night to eat. He is like a big striped birdseed-sucking Roomba Vacuum!

Well since Odoriferous Rex is a regular now, I have decided to try and desensitize him to my presence. He tolerates raccoons and feral cats without getting too nervous, so I figure he may as well learn to tolerate me.

Tonight he just watched me as I opened a window and sang a little skunk song to him. He didn't stamp, jump, scream or spit, although he did puff his tail up. He resisted bolting until I threw out some cat treats for him. I threw the treats well away from him, but the sound of them hitting the ground still startled him and under the deck he went. Tonight after the treat dispersal, he came out from under the deck really fast (less than 2 minutes). Before tonight, once startled under the deck, he has typically remained there for 10 minutes or longer.

I call that progress! (Eric calls it abject lunacy...)

I'm with Eric on this one, You may end up sleeping in the Dog house If You get sprayed Angela, No wild animal unless their Young and inexperienced tangles with a skunk, It just isn't worth It as the smell lingers for days on an animal I've read, Humans can wash It off, But I don't know what You'd use, Lye soap maybe?

Edit: In case You or Eric need It I looked this up on Skunk scent removal:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_remove_skunk_odor
Google Search - skunk smell removal

And forget about Tomatoes, they don't work I've read.

Good Luck.

Okay, nobody else asked, so I guess I have to.

What is a skunk song? Can you provide a link to a sample somewhere?

we have a couple of those in the local city park. Fun to look at but not to mess with. Luckily they are fairly shy around humans

Yes, lucky they are, otherwise some official would want them dead.

Don't think this guy is so shy.
