For some reason, my G4 "Digital Audio" desktop machine, running 10.4.11 seems to be freezing up under BOINC version 5.10.7.

This seems to have become an issue since a recent Security Update. Downloading and installing the most recent one, yesterday, hasn't fixed it, though.

It actually started with the freeze problem a couple of weeks ago while I was traveling. The machine was freezing anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, or so, after a reboot. Wife and daughter were having to reboot the machine several times a day until I got home and figured out what was doing it. In any case, disabling BOINC from the startup items seems to have fixed the problem. No more freezes since BOINC disabled.

Anybody else running into this?

I'd also add that I have a G4 white iBook running 10.4.11 and the same version of the BOINC client with no problem. Software on both machines is pretty much the same, so I'm thinking the problem with the G4 "Digital Audio" may be specific to that machine.

I have one of the last of the G4 Ibooks sold but it is not running BOINC (Thats for the G5). In any case, I just got back from a trip where I was getting a boot required message doing normal stuff. I discovered the Apple supplied additional 1 GB memory was failing. I just replaced it and the things seem to be back to normal. I suggest you get the original load disk out for the Ibook and run the test programs on it (Boot disk 1 holding down the option key). I found the problem when I discovered I was missing some of my memory. I couldn't run the test disk till I got home but they confirmed what I thought. If this runs clean, then it may be a software issue.

Mistake, Get the original disk for the computer. There may be a difference between the test programs, so just to be sure, use the original test program that came with the computer.

No, but my G4s all have Panther (Mac OS v10.3.9). No such problem on my G5 with v10.4.11 either; this host runs BOINC v5.10.45.

My one “Digital Audio” G4 (PowerMac 3,4), which runs BOINC v5.10.20, had a different problem: random science-app crashes when graphics were displayed. It never affected the OS or any other program, and it stopped happening when I disabled the screensaver. So I’d have to say that, aside from not being able to show any graphics (I run an optimized app for this project anyway), that system BOINCs just fine.
