Raw data pipeline: Jeff and I are mining old files that were only partially done for one reason or another. Hopefully these can keep us crunching until we get more data from Arecibo. To add insult to injury, it seems the observatory has been suffering from several power outages the past few days, probably due to thunderstorms.

MySQL databases: So far so good with mork as the replica. We recovered pretty quickly from the outage yesterday. I'm hoping the freeze yesterday was a fluke, or caused by some temporary variable which has since changed, or at the very least next time it happens we'll have some kind of smoking gun somewhere on the system. We're looking into getting its twin "mindy" on line sooner than later.

NTPCkr: Jeff and I met this morning to discuss the current status of what we need to do to get this thing on line. To be clear, Jeff has been doing pretty much all the work on the NTPCkr engine, and I've been helping with the cosmetic/web stuff. Anyway, Jeff has a couple bugs to clear up. Nothing major - things like the reporting mechanism sometimes spits out the same candidate twice. I've been working on web site stuff, like putting in all the hooks to allow people to discuss candidates amongst themselves on a separate forum. Once we clear up our current set of bugs/updates I'll fire up a daily cronjob which will (a) generate the current "top ten" list, (b) pull all the data from the science database from these candidates (if not already on disk) for plotting purposes, and (c) create discussion threads for each candidate (if they don't already exist). Then we're live, but we'll have many "version 2.0" tasks to address right away.

- Matt

If "Mork" eventually becomes the master, and the "twin" becomes the replica, wouldn't "Orson" be the better name -- since database changes would be reported by Mork to Orson?

For the record, "mindy" will likely become a compute server - definitely not a database server. Otherwise, yes, mork/orson would be a more obvious name pairing. Then again, our server naming conventions spin off on wild tangents at complete random, and are, for the most part, completely arbitrary.

But surely the twin of "Orson" is "Cart" ?

You can't have a "Cart" before the "Horse", can you?

Matt,
If your doing web stuff for the NitPicker, if you think this information is informative and cool, you could consider adding a small amount of this science information to the front page of the website!

The only thing that changes on the front page here is the user of the day and the news items. But adding a small extra section to the front page about the "Latest Candidate Signals" would be certain to draw thousands of new users. This is what this project does, advertise it where people will see it, on the front page as a short summery.

It would be very cool.

John.

You can if you are referring to a cart-horse...

Thats an excellent idea!

Maybe a simplified "Top 3 signals today" or something for people passing by the website. It would definitely grab their attention

A past friend of mine named her series of cats after famous scientists/physicist. Schrodinger, Newton, Tesla, etc. There are enough scientists to name the servers after. :)

Not wanting to add to anyone's work, but... the "science status" page script could use some scrutiny, as the "overflow rate" has been at 4.4% every time I've looked at it in the last month (or so...), for the multi-beam data recorder, the "as of" value is in the 53k minutes range, and the "signals already found" section is completely blank.

The science status page is still under construction, the man needs some time to complete the work.

The page says:
Note: This page is still vastly under construction

I love this idea.

Raw data pipeline: Jeff and I are mining old files that were only partially done for one reason or another.
I never thought I would see the day that Jeff & Matt are having ti mine partly used data files. I gess it just goes to show how far technology has come in the last ten years. I'm certainly not complaining I am just pointing it out, I'm also aware that there is a swag of data waiting for Matts radar blanking software. Good luck with wrapping up software Matt.
