It's a kind of Fort Alamo to Italians. It blocked the Austrian advance after Caporetto. In the Second World War it hosted many partisans. Many of them were captured and hanged at Bassano del Grappa.

Giro d'Italia and Tour de France have history lessons with helicopter views when the contenders pass a village.
At very least here our commentators Roberto Vacchi and Anders Adamsson have.
Both good and bad stories.

A sports commentator at SVT (Almost like BBC) once called his workplace at the channel, Canale Grande:)
Perhaps not so far fetched.
After all Stockholm is also called Venice of the North.

Sorry for the silence. I've been at a spa in Rimini to cure my ailing neck with mud baths. They told me a period of 15-20 days is necessary for the cure to have effect. I hope it is true.

Rimini:) Been there.
Not at a spa though.
Only at the beach.
Where I met what I first thought was a dog.
No. It was a young lion coming at me.
The owner had it leashed so I was safe anyway.
Once in a lifetime!

Two news from Italy: the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is to be transferred from Reading, UK, to a new site near Bologna. It will host a new computer. I haven't been able to find out its architecture, but it will be powered by a 10 MW power line, so it should be a big beast. The Reading Center has a Cray.
Second, an initiative of the Venice State Archives and the Lausanne Polytechnic in Switzerland (EPFL) will build a Time Machine by scanning and digitizing the 80 km long shelves of the Venice State Archives, covering 1000 years of political, economic, military and medical records all contained in the Venice archives, plus paintings and musical sheets. Think of Tiziano, Tintoretto and Antonio Vivaldi. The project is described in the 15 June issue of "Nature". So even if Venice should go covered by the Adriatic Sea because of global warming, its magnificent heritage will not be lost.
