But Ingo never won a Downhill, while his competitor Gustav Thoeni was second to Franz Klammer on the mythical Streif by a few thousands of a second. Maybe he should have been an ex aequo winner. I saw him om Tv. Franz was already on the podium when people just screamed. At half course Gustav had the best time. Tullio |

He did raced once on the mythical Streif... He crashed in the End schuss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKPukQrwIiw Thöni vs Stenmark - L'ultima porta - diretta https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IT2SizK89ew |

The last man to win in slalom, giant slalom and downhill was Toni Sailer, 1956 Cortina Olympics. Then the specialties separated and each had its own champions, with he addition of SuperG. Maybe only Tina Maze and Lindsey Vonn followed in Sailer's path. Tullio |

There is something with mountains :) Nobel Laureate in Physics 2016 Professor Michael Kosterlitz. One of Michael Kosterlitz great passions in life is rock climbing. He has been doing it for many years, and was one of Britain's best free-climbers, that is climbing without a rope when he was younger. He made several impressions in the climbing world, and among other things a cliff in Italy was named after him. It took ten years before anyone else managed to do the same. |

Free climbing has two meanings. The first, and oldest, is climbing without a rope, secured only by your hands. This is called "in libera" in Italy, especially in the V al Rosandra climbing ground near Trieste, where I practiced. The more modern meaning is climbing with a rope, secured by pitons, musketeers, nuts and bolts, but without using the traction of the rope to help you to advance. This is used by most so called "free climbers", who are not free climbers at all in the first version. Free climbing of the first kind results in many deaths, like that of my friend Enzo Cozzolino, nicknamed "Grongo" after a fish, who opened the 800 meters dihedral on the Piccolo Mangart di Coritenza in the Alpi Giulie and other Dolomite climbs like Cima Scotoni. Th e Trieste Climbing school is now named after him. Tullio |

I prefer walking or skiing in the mountains. Just by seeing people climbing them makes my palms sweaty. Il Grongo. http://www.summitpost.org/enzo-cozzolino-grongo/331707 There are also daredevils who climbs buildings. Mustang! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpS7vhvkIQM |

Thanks for showing me Grongo. He was a much better climber then myself, and died on a fairly easy alone climb in Dolomiti. I forgot to watch the races this afternoon since I was installing a GTX 750 on my Linux box. Of course BOINC 7.6.32 which worked up to this morning did not work after the installation and I had to downgrade BOINC to 7.2.42. When upgrading from SuSE Leap 42.1 to Leap 42.2 a USB cartridge which contained pictures of my sons and their sons was canceled and loaded with a version of the OS, so I can boot from it. But nobody asked me the permission to do such a thing, and I protested with SuSE Italia. But the pictures and films are gone. Ciao Tullio |
