Magnitude 6.2 at Norcia, other shocks in central Italy. 22 dead so far, but this is a partial number. Many villages destroyed, with rescue teams searching survivors. All TV stations broadcast live the rescue efforts.

Accumuli, Amatrice and Arquata del Tronto partially destroyed.Amatrice gives its name to a spaghetti plate.

Restaurants across Italy are being called upon to donate €1 from sales of the famed amatriciana pasta dish, which was invented in Amatrice, to the Red Cross in order to help earthquake victims.
I got mixed feelings about it...

It will take much more money to rebuild what was destroyed. Unfortunately, no money is spent in building anti earthquakes homes, school and hospitals. A 6 magnitude quake would do little damage in Japan or California, and kill very few people.Dead are more than 60 and the count is rising.

Money and time...
In L'Aquila, not far from tonight's event, an earthquake of the same strength as that of Amatrice, caused a disaster Easter 2009. 309 people died and 1,600 were injured. Reconstruction work in the city are still ongoing. The earthquake and its consequences led to a trial of seismologists, politicians and rescue workers.

Speaking about safe homes.
A swedish family lives in Perugia that's rather far from the epicenter.
Their home is secured from earthquakes, but still it was shaking badly for more than 2 minutes.
Their cat woke the family one hour before the event when she was acting very odd and whining.
Perhaps the cat knew what about to come.

Many animals seem to foresee a quake with unusual behavior. Unfortunately, they are unable to communicate with us.
They might be able to hear very low frequency waves, which we don't perceive, caused by fracturing of rocks.

We don't need broadband, which is useful only for soccer games and porn. We need secure homes, schools and hospitals. Will the Gov understand this?

Looking at the news photos many buildings in the region affected were very old,and just crumbled away to piles of rocks and timber. When replacing such buildings they certainly need to be replaced with more quake resistant structures. However, I can't help but ponder how the local population will take to this...

As for the "civil" structures like schools and hospitals I feel they should have been built to higher standards, but appear not to have been. No whether this is due to "planning constraints", or deliberate acts of omission I have no idea.

A school was restructured in 2012 and should have been up to modern standards, yet it crashed. Prof Boschi of the Italian Geophysical Institute says that at Norcia, which was rebuilt after a quake in 1979, no building crashed. Much depends on the quality of work done. Many rebuilding operations are assigned to the lowest bidder, and you can see the results. Many older building and churches survived the shocks, they have done this for centuries, The first quake in Amatrice was in 1609, two others followed.

We've had some serious issues with build quality in Scotland. A large number of schools, mostly built by one contractor, have recently been inspected and found to have wall ties missing and other similar defects; this follows a large section of wall falling down.

Also the money for redoubling the rails in the latest train tragedy was there but was not spent. This depends on Italy's greatest handicap, its bureaucracy, which is still in Borbonic mood.

Ciao a tutti!

Come mai hai così tante difficoltà? poca partecipazione, pochi utenti effettivamente attivi? pochi argomenti?
