Do you mean that the actuall progress of SETI@home is too slow? I mean there are progresses but i my mind the team is more employed with the servers than in the scientific propress. What about to employ more people? Greetings |

From my understanding the team at Berkley want to do more science and are working as best they can to improve it e.g RFI reduction and Astropulse. The problem lies in people demanding a 24/7 uptime of the project and this means too much time is spent babysitting the servers and keeping things running (as best they can with the current funding that they have). Matt explains in this thread about all the bandwidth issues they are experiencing, and also methods of dealing with these issues including the possibility of making the project only available through certain times of the day... If they had an infinite pool of money im sure they would get more real science done but unfortunatley working on an already stretched budget, I believe they are doing the best they can and the majority really appreciate they're effort, time and patience!!! Its true, if SETI@home had 1 hundredth of the NASA budget, and a crew of 20 full time staff scientists, i bet we would find what we are looking for. Its very hard to get governments to take this type of science seriously, hence there is little or no money. John. |

It might help progress if the user community could take steps to help s@h through their difficulties. I, for example, only allow connections a few hours per day and keep a large cache to get over the down periods. One can do this on the preferences tab within boinc manager. My understanding is that the key problem at Berekeley is the limited network bandwidth and the boinc software, which is pretty network-inefficient. I figure that within my connection window, the uploads/downloads will generally work and if not, so what; there will be about 9 more days to try before the cache is cleared. |
