I’m aware of the recent server dl and ul issues. However, I’m not sure the problem I’m currently experiencing is related to that, or not. I’ve searched the message boards and FAQ help files and can’t seem to find this particular issue specifically addressed anywhere…

I recently had to totally uninstall BOINC from my comp. I then downloaded and installed version 6.6.36 a couple of days ago so I could start crunching again. I attached to SETI as well as to the two other projects that I run on occasion.

Now, I get the following messages and can’t fetch new work or do anything—not only with SETI (it seems) but with any of the projects I’m attached to:

7/2/2009 4:24:53 AM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
7/2/2009 4:25:15 AM BOINC can't access Internet - check network connection or proxy configuration.
7/2/2009 4:25:30 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server
7/2/2009 4:29:20 AM SETI@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
7/2/2009 4:29:20 AM SETI@home Requesting new tasks
7/2/2009 4:29:45 AM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

I’m connected to the internet 24/7 and can access websites just fine. That I know of, I’ve never used a proxy on BOINC before, and have no idea how to “configure” anything for that. Please bear with me here, I’m not as learned about BOINC and SETI as most of you seem to be on the message boards…but I’d love to be able to get this working again! Help, please!

You don't tell us what OS you're running, or what security software is running on that OS.

It's entirely likely that something like Windows Firewall is saying "I don't know what this is, so I'm not going to let it talk to the world."

Windows XP Pro...and Webroot Antivirus and Webroot Firewall. I temp disabled my Firewall and Anti to see if that could be an issue and closed and restarted BOINC. Same problem occured not being able to access server.

The Webroot Anti and Firewall are the same as I have had running all along with BOINC in the past. I haven't changed anything on them before or since installing the 6.6.36 version of BOINC a couple days ago. Could they possibly be not recognizing this newer version, then??

The message basically says "BOINC can't reach the internet" and you have a Firewall -- which is designed to limit internet access.

I've not used Webroot, so I can't tell you if needs special rules, if it "forgot" BOINC when you uninstalled it, or if it is the cause.

... or if a recent XP update is somehow blocking it.

Think "network access" and do not focus on the word "proxy" -- a proxy is just one kind of access, and there are many.

Ok, I think you are correct about something with the firewall going on (no longer recognizing it, or whatever). After rebooting and disabling the firewall and antivirus again, THIS is now what I receive in BOINC:

7/2/2009 1:49:39 PM SETI@home Requesting new tasks
7/2/2009 1:51:17 PM Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
7/2/2009 1:51:18 PM Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
7/2/2009 1:51:19 PM SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer

So, ummm, any ideas on what failure receiving data from the peer might mean, now? Is it a server issue, in this case, perhaps? I appreciate the help much, thank you!

It probably means that you're now seeing the server-side issues caused by all of the current loading, and as things settle down, you'll be back in business.

Probably. Waiting will tell.
