Message 910209 - Posted: 22 Jun 2009, 19:09:28 UTC

My Computer works 9 units at the same time, 8 processor treads and 1 CUDA tread.
The processor is 100% busy, so all is ok.
When it works astropulse, there are just 2 treads going,1 for astropulse and 1 CUDA and the processor is just less than 20% busy!!!
Is it correct or what else?
Hi and thanks to all

It depends on what the workunits are tagged as.

What I mean is that any workunits labelled AstroPulse can (currently) only be done on the CPU. Any tasks marked as MultiBeam v6.03 can only be done on the CPU. Any tasks that are tagged as MultiBeam v6.08 will be scheduled to be run on the GPU, and failing that will fall back to the CPU. BOINC should ask for all three types of work to keep your system busy 100%, but the problem is that SETI@Home has been running dangerously low on work, too low to keep an even split of work on their servers to hand out to everyone. Hopefully when they fix their problems at the Arecibo dish, this problem will go away.

The odd thing is that, after 12 reduced CPU load hours , this pc is gone back to cruch 9 WUs at same time again?
It happened after I connected to te project.

It probably reported work and requested new work to keep all resources occupied.

Hi again!
It is not lack of work as I have 634 WUs waiting on this computer,(but only one Astropulse, the one going),and this morning I found again two threads again only going on!!
I guess I might have more Astropulse WUs to let them be worked same time like my laptop did,he had two cores and worked two astropulse!

Could we see some messages from the messages tab? Try to find where it switches from 9 tasks to 2 tasks.

Message 916998 - Posted: 12 Jul 2009, 2:27:53 UTC

Today I see that my computer got astropulse WU. I had turned off astropulse in my preferences when it first started because they never finished on time. Now I can't find the switch to turn astropulse off in my preferences file. Did upgrading to 6.6.36 have something to do with the problem? If I can't turn Astropulse off I will have to quit seti after over ten years of computing.
Sincerely
Jim Biersach

* Go to the Seti project preferences.
* Edit them.
* Set them up so they go something like this:
- Run only the selected applications SETI@home Enhanced: yes
Astropulse: no
Astropulse v5: no
- If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? no
- Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available (whatever you want)
Use Central Processing Unit (CPU) yes
* Save the changes to the website.
* Open BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->Select Seti->Click Update.

If the WU don't complete then why waste energy for nothing.
I have set NO in both places and still get Astropulse.
Here is what it looks like.

Its this option right here. This one says, "If I don't have work from your preferred app, should I download one of the others to keep your CPU busy?". So, in your case, it would be: "If there's no SETI@Home MultiBeam work, should I download AstroPulse to keep your CPU busy?" and you've answered: "Yes".

Change that to a "No" and you should be good.

I had just done that before seeing your post. I hope it works. Right now the computer is 75% done with the Astropulse WU and it has been working on it for 12 days. When I first set up the preferences I had a WORK and HOME computer preferences that both said no to "If I don't have work from your preferred app, should I download one of the others to keep your CPU busy?" Now HOME has disappeared and was replaced by DEFAULT. This new DEFAULT preference hijacked my home computer and reset the settings. I hope my changes will correct the problem on the next download.

Your computers are set up to use the default (or ---) venue?
Go to your account, computers on this account, click on the Details link for any of the computers, scroll to the bottom and check what "Location" they are on.

If anything else than ---, use the drop-down menu to make them --- and Update.
Perhaps wise to click Upgrade anyway if it's already set to ---

You may also want to change "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available yes" to "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available no". Astropulse doesn't run on the GPU yet, while even if you may not have a usable GPU in your system it may throw off the preferences.

If neither of those fix things, you could use the Lunatics Unified Installer to get the optimized application(s) and through it set to only use Astropulse. Then BOINC will follow that.

The Lunatics solution is the only one at this point. There is no way yet to set preferences for Astropulse v5.05 only, so having an app_info file with just an AP5.05 entry (and possibly MB6.08 if you're running a CUDA card) is what's needed.
Remember to tick the "accept work from other applications" box in your preferences as AP 5.05 is not a selectable application yet.
