I decided to start new thread to discuss this great product. For me "Lunatics' Unified Installer" by Jason G (Thanks Jason!) is just amazing - - it saves a lot of handwork when you want to install Optimized SETI apps. I will recommend to anyone to use it. It is a pity that there are only ~1500 Downloads till now. { Guess who is behind the window :) } The name of the file is: Lunatics_Win32v0.1_AP503r112_AKv8b_CudaV11.exe (4 MB) (All You Need is this file) It contains latest versions of All Win32 (SSE, ..., SSE4.1) Optimized SETI apps - MB, AP, CUDA. (They compute MUCH faster (150% - 250%) than "standard" apps) You can use any combination your CPU/GPU supports. (e.g. SSE3 for AP, SSE4.1 for MB - use CPU-Z freeware utility to check what is Max SSE... your CPU can do) You only need to select the options shown on the screen-shot above - the Installer "knows" where your BOINC installation is. It "generates" the .exe files and "app_info.xml" file and puts them where they should be. Get the "Lunatics' Unified Installer" from: http://lunatics.kwsn.net/index.php?module=Downloads;sa=dlview;id=184 (Click on [Mirror 1] to Download) Before starting the "Lunatics' Unified Installer" exit BOINC and check in Windows Task Manager that there are NO running SETI apps . I'm hosting the Unified Installer on my site (link in my sig), and I know a few people have downloaded it from there. Downloads from my site are not counted in the Lunatic's 1500 so I'm willing to be that there's more downloads than that. (I hate it when people post the same thing separately!) |

It should be made clear, optimized applications are not for the set and forget crowd. It disables Boinc's ability to automatically download newer Seti application releases. It becomes the user responsibility to stay current on new project developments and/or optimized releases. |

Absolutely correct, which is why I prefer to not suggest the app in the standard Q&A forum. Most hardcore crunchers will visit Number Crunching and find out about it there. |

There are many posts/threads asking: How can I use Optimized apps? Where is this elusive BOINC Data folder? How do I make app_info.xml file? Obviously many people reading and posting to this forum want to use Optimized SETI apps but find it hard and time consuming to do it by hand. Very few know about the Unified Installer ... P.S. OzzFan: "(I hate it when people post the same thing separately!)": Sorry for that - First post was in the other (Astro... something) thread; Than I decided the subject to be important and started new thread ... Bil Thank You for the information. It is Appreciated. There is a small problem in that Historically discussion of anything Optimzed Seti belongs in the Number Crunching Forum. People just starting out with Seti sometimes ask questions here. There is a Group of People that look here to Help New Users. Most are not ready/qualified to answer questions about Optimized Applications. So it adds confusion. Typically getting Optimized Seti Applications to run has not always been easy. What you are stating is, the work of many has helped to make that easier. I can say from experience that there are things in the background that makes it not quite ready for Install it and Set it and Forget it. Then You have to add that the Group of people Responsible for those Optimized Applications normally Monitor the Number Crunching Forum. This post poses a new wrinkle. It could add new work for many to monitor questions that do not belong here when there are dedicated NC threads about Optimized Applicaions. For the momment this thread will be left for informational purposes. Regards Please consider a Donation to the Seti Project. |

Yes, I decided to inform (in separate thread) those using or willing to use Optimized Seti Applications that now they can do it easier. In the past year I had to manually install newer Optimized apps several times and it took me 30-40 minutes every time to do all the steps carefully. I think the "wizards" who make these Optimized Seti Applications will be glad if more people benefit from their hard work ... It becomes the user responsibility to stay current on new project developments and/or optimized releases. How does one go about making sure they have the latest seti app releases? Say if cuda jumps up from 6.08 or cpu up from 6.03? Thanks! |

If you're not using optimized applications, aka not using an app_info.xml file in your Seti directory, then BOINC will download the applications automatically at the next scheduler contact. If you are using optimized applications, you will have to wait for those to be updated and then install those. Or wait for a new Unified Installer. |

You can also always manually download the stock application for new versions from the seti website and insert it manually into app_info.xml untill the new optimised version comes out. |

You can also revert from using optimised to a newer stock app by removing the app_info.xml file from the appropriate directory, but all this still points to BOINC becoming a manual, time investing hobby that some do not wish to make it into. I still remember after the first wave of optimized applications, and then a subsequent new release of stock apps, volunteers came to the boards asking why they were not getting any new work, not knowing that they needed to keep an eye on things to keep them running. |

if you've already got the optimized apps installed correctly you really don't need this unified installer. This will be great when ap 5.05 comes out and they(lunatics) puts out an opt app for it. For now if you are already running the lunatics apps correctly this isnt necessary. This could be the reason so few have jumped at running the app In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Downloads of the Lunatics' Unified Installer (32 bit) reached >2000 but now it is marked [Obsolete v0.1] Win32 Lunatics' Unified Installer FINAL BETA because of the new version of Astropulse 5.05 You can get the new Astropulse 5.05 Win32 rev 168 SSE w/5.03 Astropulse 5.05 Win32 rev 168 SSE3 w/5.03 and install it manually ... or wait for the new version of Unified Installer. The "normal" way to get Optimized (for Windows) is: Go to: http://lunatics.kwsn.net/ click "Downloads" (at Top-Left) click "1 - Windows Seti@Home apps" pick what you need . Why doesnt seti develop optimized apps themselfs? wouldnt this remove the hassle? optimized apps reduce wasted processing unit cycles and increase the overall preformance of the project |

Why doesnt seti develop optimized apps themselfs? wouldnt this remove the hassle? optimized apps reduce wasted processing unit cycles and increase the overall preformance of the project The simple answer is they don't have the time. The software licence for each type of CPU can cost a ton of money. The Seti people develop software to work on any computer. They do incorporate generic optimization whenever possible. Example the current Enhanced Seti software originally took 100 hrs to do the analysis but certain algorithm optimisation during Beta testing decreased the time to 8/10 hrs. Computers operating systems for the most part are always behind in the ability to detect and report the hardware capabilities of the systems so third party software is required to determine what optimized version will work of a system. Although the generic software can to some degree take advantage of certain features when present, detecting these automatically can be challenging. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |

... The software licence for each type of CPU can cost a ton of money. ... ??? I don't understand this - why, who will get "a ton of money"? How "Lunatics" people can do it for free?! If they implement some kind of "CPU-Z, GPU-Z" incorporation in the Unified Installer the check for system capabilities and the install of Optimized SETI apps can be done automatically or semi-automatically after user confirmation of the chosen apps. So the "official" SETI people can find some way to deploy Lunatics' Unified Installer to Windows computers ... Â - ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :) Â |
