Hi there, it's the first time for me to run BOINC on my new computer, and the GPU usage kinda bothers me.

My rig has an i7 920 CPU and a GTX295 graphics card. I've already set the CPU usage limitation to 5%, but even though I've never been able to bring up the graphic visulization, the GPU temperature readings went straight up to 93 celsius, when the GPU fan RPM hit 3494. With single 22" monitor, the total power consumption topped 410W, just as if I was running Crysis! And I actually have triple 22' monitors....

I'm a hardware engineer, by no means a professional on SETI, I joined because I really love the idea of the whole project. My CPU takes 130W maximum, but the GTX295 may eat up over twice the energy. It'd be sweet if someone can walk me through setting up BOINC without doubling my electricity bill. Thanks!

Don't set your CPU throttle to 5%. That will make BOINC run one second every 20 seconds, or 5 seconds per minute. The throttle is used for thermal reasons only. It will suspend/resume the tasks at hand, not run constantly at a maximum of 5% CPU cycles. Since BOINC is a one-source-compile-for-multiple-platforms solution, it can't depend on Windows APIs for these kinds of things.

See the steps in this FAQ on how to disable CUDA.

Also read the CUDA FAQ in my signature for a lot more information about CUDA.

Thanks! I didn't know it had something to do CUDA, I'll read the FAQs.
