Since it's been a while since I've had Boinc installed I went ahead and got the newest 6.6.31. (I had 5.2.13) And now it won't suspend work. I like to limit the number of hours the thing runs and I used to just hit the suspend activity that was on the taskbar. So now the taskbar doesn't have it and has Snooze instead. I've done that and it seems to do nothing. And now the suspend is under the Activity menu, and I've twice now come back to find it's been running the entire time it's supposedly been suspended. And looking at the messages, it no longer says it's been suspended by user. Anyone know what's up with that? |

6.6.31 has a severe bug, it won't do all that and when exiting the client, the science applications will continue running. So exit BOINC, make sure the science applications aren't running and upgrade to BOINC 6.6.36 which has all that fixed. |

I like to limit the number of hours the thing runs and I used to just hit the suspend activity that was on the taskbar. The change was made to a one hour snooze by users request. People complained of forgetting to reactivate Boinc after suspending. The snooze is generally used by game players that find that Boinc sometime has a slow down effect on some high end video games or other users while running other very CPU intensive applications. For me a better question is why you wouldn't want Boinc to run when you are away from the computer. The idea of Boinc is to use the extra CPU cycle that you aren't being used. I personally run Boinc 24/7 with no noticeably effect. If it's a system that you want to go into hibernation when you are away from the keyboard then you can set your Computing preferences to Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last XX minutes. BTW You may want to upgrade to V6.6.36 from V6.6.31. The 'Shutdown connected Client' in the Advanced menu was broken. EDIT: Looks like Ageless beat me on the upgrade edit. Thanks, ageless. Wow, I just downloaded that the other day. They must have JUST changed it. But I'll get the latest one. |

Yup. :-) That too. Although I didn't get too concerned if I forgot to reactivate. But now I "get" the snooze thing and why it starts running again anyway. (Except mine's not lasting even an hour.)
I think because I didn't say I don't want it to run when I'm away from the computer. I said I wanted to limit the amount of time it's running. Call me paranoid, but I've never quite liked the idea of the CPU going 24/7. I did try limiting the % on the CPU but that affected other stuff, and in the end it was easier to just manually limit it by suspending it. And then there's also those games and such as you mentioned... |

Computers are designed to run at max capacity 24/7. If a system can't handle it, it was badly built. Just make sure the dust bunnies are chased away from time to time. I've had systems run on the project 5-6 years. Boinc does have a built in scheduler in its local preferences if you have a fairly constant routine. |

The exception to this is laptops that have to compromise on other things to make them small and light. Some laptops can take it, and others cannot. BOINC WIKI |
