>>> boinc_cli.exe -install CreateService failed - The specified service has been marked for deletion. (0x430) When trying to create the service in Win2K machines the above error occurs. Has anyone tried this and manged to soolve/understand? There are no problems creating the service in WinXP machines. PS: There are posts in Q&A about this problem, but they have remained unanswered. Thank you |

Thank you > Some Win2k PC's have a problem with installing the service. Dowload these registry keys to manually install the service if your having probs: http://www.wombatradio.com/files/boinc_reg.zip Lemme know if these keys don't install the service for you. |

Thank you > I've seen this happen on both 2k and XP if the service is already somehow installed, it doesn't blow a trumpet about it's success when it installs, the fact that the message states the service is marked for deletion hints at that, try checking in the services list to see if boinc is there, you could also try using the -uninstall switch to make sure the relevant registry entry is purged, ready for trying to install the service again. Just guessing! Ken Phillips BOINC question? Look here "The beginning is the most important part of the work." - Plato |

> CreateService failed - The specified service has been marked for deletion. > (0x430) > This means you have to reboot. The service is marked for deletion (at the next reboot). After that you should be able to reinstall the service. Aloha, Uli |

Thank you very much for the prompt response! @Ulrich Metzner Boinc was never installed in these machines and there was never a BOINC service before. I've tried rebooting, but the same error message again and again. @Ken Phillips Same as above and I've tried the -uninsatall switch, but it says there is no service to uninstall. @CyberGoyle I've downloaded the zip file there are 4 files: boinc1.reg to boinc4.reg. Looked inside . . . very intimidating. What do I suppose to do now? (I've never manually edited the registry before). PS: I have also given full permisiion to the BOINC folder, just in case there was a security problem (I am administrator), but no luck. |

No harm will come of them if it doesnt work...after double clicking them, the BOINC service should be installed and ready to run... |

Thank you CyberGoyle I managed to import boinc2.reg and boinc4.reg, but I get an error with boinc1.reg and boinc3.reg . . . "Error accessing the registry" there is no any other explanation(?). Checked the service list and BOINC is not there. Have you tried doing this in one of your W2K machines? |

Have you tried doing this in > one of your W2K machines? > I fear you may have an issue with your registry. I created these reg. files simply by exporting them from a Windows 2000 PC that I had installed BOINC as a service on, and I used them to install the service on 3 PC's that I was having trouble with. Another possibility is that the keys in files 2 and 4 can't be loaded because that portion of your registry doesn't have the necessary permissions. You can right-click the files, choose edit to view their contents, then manually navigate to the registry location using regedt32 (not regedit) the files specify to make sure that registry tree has full administrator control. I would warn you, if you are not comfortable editing your registry or you are not sure you can recover from any mistakes, you may not want to mess with your registry. BOINC could become the least of your problems with a few bad registry errors. If all else fails, I would suggest running the BOINC GUI client. You can still use BOINCview to control it remotely. |

Ihave had the same problem. But I figured out that it's possible to install the service as local administrator. That's true at least for my Windows 2000 professional PC. Rainer |

I followed your instructions and yes there were security problems inside the registry . . . not all the registry tree was under "Administrator" control, but parts of it only "System" had full control. After changing this I was allowed to import the 'boinc1.reg' and 'boinc3.reg' files. Reboot the machine and found the service was in place, but it was pointing to drive C: (my BOINC folder is under D:) so I edited the register again and after that it works like a dream. CyberGoyle THANK YOU for all your help! @Rainer Emrich: I've always been "local administrator" on these machines and also tried the "Administrator" account. The problem still there with the latest version of "boinc_gui.exe" and W2K (apparently with previous versions it used to work consistently). PS: Just one more piece of information for whoever has to fix this bug . . . After CyberGoyle changes I tried once more "boinc_cli.exe -install", but still the same error. "boinc_cli.exe -uninstall" works fine. At least we know we can get round by editing the registry! |

Glad you picked up on the install location, I forgot to mention my keys were setup for the default install at C:\Program Files\BOINC. Enjoy! |
