Message 34780 - Posted: 10 Oct 2004, 7:54:29 UTC

Hi all

This time it is:
-- Auto-jump to first unread post feature
(The browser will automatically jump to the first post that you haven't read in a thread)
-- Optimizations: don't lookup first post in thread if no excerpt is needed (ie. only do it in Q&A)
-- HTML fixed for initial posts (creating a thread) in the forum (added missing stripslashes)
-- Added "Unread post" icon to /user folder + removed placeholder
-- Removed debug code for forum-stuff that has proven to work
-- Changed signatures into "dynamic" signatures
(Dynamic signatures use a flag in the database to decide whether to add a sig to a post or not instead of simply inserting the signature when the post is created. This has several advantages:
1) A user won't have to go back and change all previous posts if he/she has made a typo in the sig
2) Saves a considerable amount of database space
3) When quoting the sig is not quoted - good thing because it usually caused strange results
4) Doesn't add any new queries to the DB)
-- Added "Hide signatures" feature
(Will allow people with 28.8 modems etc. to hide signatures from posts with signatures)

I don't usually post about new features here in the public project, but the changes were accidentally deployed here at the same time as in alpha, so the new code hasn't really been tested that much.
If you find any errors, something that doesn't work as you would have expected or if you simply have a comment about the features please write a reply to this thread.

I have asked the alphatesters to write here as well if they find anything so that there isn't too much duplication of messages.

Enjoy

Janus,
Now if I'm the last one to comment in a thread I get the "unread post(s)" line; something it didnt do before since I was the one who typed it.

Thread continued from here.

Janus,

Sometimes things get put in the message area that makes the message area expand. I see it a lot when people use three of the signatures side by side. In order to read the massages you have to use the sliding bar at the bottom of the page to read all the way across. Would it be hard to constrain the width to a certain size or would that just create new problems?

Couldn't we also have different sites in one thread, f.e. if there are more then 25 posts or so. And when there are more then 200 posts a new thread will automatically open?
P.S. I like the new features!

Does this always happen or just sometimes?
It should not stay unread when you press the "Number crunching" link on the top to get back to the thread-list does it do this?

Image sizes: One of the most difficult things to do. It is easier to simply politely ask the people to post their signature in a different way.
(or use the new "hide signatures" feature - note that it only hides signatures posted after the 9th of Oct).

Subpages on long threads: Idea noted - thanks!

Nice work Janus!

One suggestion: How about a post index or something that allows us to see when a reply is made to a specific post.

Annoying. I start to read a reply and then suddenly things jump around. Maybe that should have been a preferences option?

The new features in this section are terrific, even though I thought we'd gone back to the age of 'yellow journalism' seeing that yellow icon in the upper left.

One thing in the 'News' section of the 'Home Page' which precedes these message boards:
It would be helpful to have the time (in UCT [GMT])following the date of the news post so readers the world over can see how 'fresh' the post is.

thank you

Having a custom time zone would be an excellent feature to add.
Some of the other projects are running a bit behind on the fourm updates but I really dont post very much. It would be nice to see some of the other projects do some catching up.

@Janus....

You are the man, sir! You have my greatest respect! I really like the new forum features. Everything works "as advertised". I can see the enjoyment you get out of doing this kind of work, it is reflected in said work.

The thing that annoys me about the autojump is now I have to push the back button twice to get out of the page.

It is a preferences option - if you go to Your account->Forum preferences you should be able to turn it off =)
I almost always make my features optional - if someone doesn't like a particular feature then that someone can simply customize his or her way out of it.

>Having a custom time zone would be an excellent feature to add.

Noted

>perhaps only on my side (IE6.02)XP 512 MB, "new" formating behaviour:

Weird - did it happen more than once? Seems like the connection suddenly got cut in the middle of the transfer of the webpage...

>The thing that annoys me about the autojump is now
>I have to push the back button twice to get out of the page.

What browser do you use? This may be difficult to fix since it doesn't happen on all browsers...
