Message 898325 - Posted: 22 May 2009, 19:11:42 UTC

After hearing about "Lunatics Unified Installer", decided to give Cuda a 2nd shot as the 1st failed miserably.

Rigs installed on: - AM2/AM2+ boards, AMD X2 5000+'s,6000+'s, X4 9500,9600,9950, Min 2gb DDR800, Geoforce 8400GT's,8500GS,9500GT's, Vista Business (32bit) & boinc 6.6.28 - also 19" widescreen monitors except my own workstation which is 22" widescreen.

Installation procedure followed....updated gpu drivers,unified installer,cuda 2.2 & cuda toolkit.

Cuda running successfully on only 2 rigs, wife's & my workstation. All the other insallations messed up every system. Lost NVidia Control Panel on those systems, also within seconds of booting up, display would throw up "out of range" forcing a reboot into safe mode to restore.

Unfortunately, even though cuda is successfully running on my workstation & NVidia Control Panel is intact, I have lost the 1280x800 resolution & should I attempt it, lose top of screen & also taskbar.

What I just cannot understand is my wife's machine: - AM2+ board, X2 6000+ cpu,2x 2gb DDR800, 9500GT (512mb) & Vista Business - It's running perfectly with no loss of resolution or NVidia Control Panel.

IMO, Cuda 2.2 drivers not up to scratch. either that or 6.6.28 problem?

Since BOINC doesn't install any drivers for your videocard, you can easily throw that one out of the list. It only uses the drivers installed.

So it's either the drivers, or the Lunatics unified installer.

Thanks Ageless. IMO, I don't think it's the unified installer for the simple reason is that I restored all the messed up systems & reapplied the drivers but not the installer - same problem.

After checking the threads, checked out all rigs just in case of overheating. No problems as all my builds are not basic & they all have more than sufficient cooling.

Asides from the NVIdia drivers, which I think is the root of the problems, just a thought.......... As AMD has purchased ATI, wondering if a problem similar to the Intel/AMD complier problem is emerging within NVidia (as I said, just a thought as I can't confirm this as I have no Intel systems as yet)

I can't confirm that either. Haven't got a CUDA card (wouldn't want to be seen with one either. ;-)).

I'd doubt that theres a problem with nvidia on AMD problem. The #1 PC is an AMD 920 with 4 CUDA cards.

In that case, it has to be the Cuda 2.2 drivers & why when installing those, it disables/uninstalls their own Control Panel?

Again, I don't think NVidia thought Cuda through properly, unless they really only want people to use their high end cards with the latest mobo's/CPU's & ram? Just a thought.

There has been reports of the CUDA 2.2 Drivers not installing correctly.
Try using 182.xx instead and see if that works on those PC's which have the issues.

Nvidia drivers can be difficult to install properly. To install a new driver, go into control panel uner Programs and Features or Add and Remove Programs (Vista/XP) and uninstall the old display driver first. Before rebooting, I also go into device mangaer and uninstall the display adapter. Then reboot. When the desktop comes backup cancel the Windows New Hardware Found Wizard and then disable any anti-virus or anti-spyware programs, this is important! Then install the new Nvidia drivers and reboot when prompted.

Nvidia driver installs don't usually work when you try to install one over the top of another without uninstalling the old drivers first. Cuda drivers are included in the new video drivers from the Nvidia website, no need for a seperate install.

Thanks Popandbob/Bad Actor. Visited supplier yesterday for more stock & also purchased 2x 9500GT 1gb cards. Installed 1 on Dacom-5 host which only had onboard graphics. Same problem, so will do what you advised shortly & if it works, will install the other card on my XP X64 rig.

If the latest drivers include cuda drivers, do you still need to install the cuda toolkit?

OK guys, reinstalled driver, but got out of range signal again, so booted into safe mode, deleted all drivers & folders so that system will default to onboard gpu.

Reinstalled 185.85 & it runs (still lost the 1280x800 resolution, so dropped it back to 1280x768 - ok).

No gpu crunching, so installed cuda 2.2 toolkit & all 5 cores crunching.

Thanks for the advice guys. Will install other card later.

Have you tried a lower resolution, a lower refresh rate or to update your monitor drivers? The "signal out of range" error is a monitor error, not a video card error. Video card drivers won't magically increase the resolution and refresh rate that your monitor is capable of, you need drivers for the monitor for that.

Monitors didn't come with drivers, just a user manual disk. I just find 1280x800 just right for my eyesight, but have dropped it to 1280x768 & it looks sufficient.

OK, just finished installing 9500GT on XP X64 rig with a slight hiccup (forgot to uninstall ATI Drivers for the onboard graphics - found that the hard way with a dreaded BSOD).

185.85 X64 driver installed (1280x800 resolution ok), Cuda 2.2 Toolkit & Unified Installer ok.

Unfortunately, no gpu crunching..........what am I missing or forgot to do?

Forget it, just re-checked & it's now crunching.

Knowing Windows, your monitor is then installed as a "standard display adapter (VGA)". At least see in Windows if there is a driver included for the monitor (there must be a brand name and model number on them somewhere!) and either set it to something in the list of monitors, or go onto the net and look for drivers for your monitor.

Just "finding 1280x800 right for your eyesight" is not a way to set up a monitor, when the monitor can't do that without a driver telling it it can do that. You can then just as well not install updated drivers for the videocard as Windows' drivers should be sufficient.

Jord,

You're confusing monitor drivers with graphics card drivers.

This one I'm typing on, for example, says "Plug and Play Monitor on 64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX".

The first part is the monitor itself: some come with a so-called 'driver CD', which is actually just an .inf file specifying available resolutions. But if PnP is working, that's fine, you don't need anything else.

The bit you're talking about, "standard display adapter (VGA)", is the graphics card driver, and is the only bit that matters for CUDA: without a (late-ish) nVidia driver, no CUDA. You may see "standard display adapter (VGA)" for a nanosecond after you remove an old driver, but almost immediately the 'Found new hardware' wizard will kick in and you'll have to supply a driver disk for the graphics card (or cancel and run setup - RTFM).

FWIW, I installed the 185.85 nVidia download drivers straight over the top of whatever I had before, without uninstalling first, and they just worked - first time, and continuously ever since.

Jord,

You're confusing monitor drivers with graphics card drivers.

I am not confusing monitor drivers with graphics card drivers (as I explained in the two previous posts, the graphics card drivers will not install the monitor or display drivers).

I have said the wrong thing with the standard display adapter thing, but I did really meant that Sirius B has to install the MONITOR drivers. Windows is probably showing Default Monitor, or whatever it says when there's no drivers installed. If there are drivers installed, it will tell the brand name and model number of the monitor in display properties, settings, advanced, display.

NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT [Display adapter]
ACR Acer AL2202W [Monitor] (21.7"vis, s/n LA4040024311, July 2007)

System reports the above without any monitor driver being installed.

I do recall that in the old days of CRT's, monitors came with drivers (still have the disk for my old Samsung Syncmaster 3). If modern monitors require drivers, shouldn't the manufacturers provide these?

As most of my monitors are Acer, will check their site for drivers, but pretty sure there will be none.....you never know though..

The monitor (if its an LCD) has a native resolution. For instance, the native resolution of my 20" LCD is 1680x1050. For a 24" LCD, it might be 1920x1200 or 1920x1080. You need to check the manufacturer's specs and set the resolution accordingly. Setting it at something other than native resolution may cause issues such as loss of quality and I suspect the out of range error your getting. If your uncomfortable with the size of the text or icons at your native resolution, that can be changed in your display properties without having to change resolution. I would also try to find a driver for any monitor that doesn't have one, either by using your Windows Update or going to the manufacturer's website.

Went to Acer's website & couldn't find any monitor drivers for download. Max res for my 19" monitors is 1440x900 & I'm comfortable at 1280x800.
