I think most freeware out on the net have an auto update feature that is activated every time the programe is started. Would not this be a cool feature for BOINC to have in its next release?

Because Boinc is used extensively in corporate and educational setting which frown on automatic updates we are not likely to see this soon. It would however be a good user opt in option.

I personally don't allow any auto updates as I like to know if an update is the cause of a system misbehavior. A better notification of available updates than burying it in the log would be useful.

Perhaps, I should rephrase my wish list. Instead of an auto update, it should be an auto check for updates. Now, is that better?

We sort of already have that. Any time there's a new version of BOINC, it is announced in the Messages tab that it is available for download.

Unfortunately, it is ONLY in the messages tab, and is extremely easy to miss.

Too true, which is why I've been in favor of making it an option to auto-upgrade, with the auto-upgrade disabled by default, leaving the user to have to enable it for it to work.

We were told by a some very vocal people early on that auto upgrade would lose a fair amount of participation because of security concersn. In any case, auto upgrade does not work on Windows Vista or WIndows 7.

A much better option would be a popup message of some sort.

I'd think a popup that announces an update and "would you like to download and install it now" similar to the Firefox updater

unfortunately Steam is only for Windows 2k xp and vista. There are a great deal more OSes than windows which makes the autoupdate process a bit touchie
