Vyper and I have been in a friendly competition for a few months now. We both want to be the first to hit 50,000 Recent Average Credit (RAC) with a single computer host. To do so near the 10th anniversary of SETI@home would be an extra sweet victory.

We both should hit the 50,000 RAC target today.

The unofficial rules of this competition are as follows: The score that counts is the one shown in the Top Computers screen on the SETI@home website.

Who will win?

Betting is not allowed on these premises! :)

(Yes, humankind will make anything into a competition. It makes life more interesting, and sometimes it does advance science a little faster.)

Thank you ... thank you ... *bows*

This is like the prolog of the spaceballs movie..

"We brake for nobody" :)

I think that this machine would perhaps get to around 60k then level out, this is kind of extreme actually.
That's really good in regards to that the code is mainly ported to cuda with the original sourcecode from berkeley with cuda optimisations without touching any way of optimisation like alex kan etc. (I could be wrong about that one)

Kind regards Vyper

Wonder what Gordon Moore would have to say?

Actually...sorry I ignorant of how these things actually work but..
(just using numbers for formulate question may be magnitudes off)

Moore observed transistor density doubling...Has the trend changed? Does (using the 10x faster number) a 295 have something the order of 10x transistors of cpu?

Or is completely different animal? What if any implication for Moore's Law has the advent of massive Parallel processing introduced?
Sorry could be a thread on it's own....This thread just really got me thinking ehh.

However...looking at it in more tangible terms...I recon yous guys RAC is on the order of 2x what the most hot rod nitrogen cooled OC beast could throw down 2 years ago.?.

More so...where will we be in 2 years time?...

Hey Hey Vyper and Bob,

you got it. more than 50000 RAC with one machine.
very impressive.
Congratulation..

Congratulations to both Bob and Vyper - for a well fought Blue Riband. There's always the next milestone - 100k ;-)

And it has been a long time since I remember an AMD machine as the Top Host. The delicious irony is that it got there courtersy of nVidia =)

Congrats to Vyper!

But Bob, he had/have one more GTX295 in the PC.. so nothing to feel sad..
Is there also a 4th slot for a GTX295 on your mobo? :-)

AFAIK - on the GPU/CUDA you don't have extensions.. ;-)
So no big space for optimization.

Or, yes? Is the opt. crew near this thread? ;-)

I'm curious Vyper, how big the power consumption of your PC is. And which PSU you use.. ;-)

Compared with your PC - my little GPU cruncher - will be soon - if everything go well - as top host #3 or 4.. ;-D
I guess it will have a RAC of ~ 34,000.

With < 185.85 and < CUDA 2.2 I had a RAC of ~ 7,500 / GPU. [also only two GPUs insert]
Now with current driver and CUDA V. the performance increased ~ 15 %.
So I guess ~ 8,500 / GPU.
..this are from manufacturer OCed GTX260 Core216..
And the whole PC take ~ 700 W out of the wall..

Congrats both on your massive production systems :D !

And take a look at the other AMD in that list.. Gerard de Groot is now at a position 4 without any GPU!

Vyper - congratulations - that is a blazing fast computer you designed and constructed.

This is a fitting tribute to the diversity and inventiveness of SETI participants and the SETI@home project over the past 10 years. This project does not fear new technology, does it?

Many thanks Bob..

For the time beeing the computer itself is mounted to a backplane of a chassi lying on a shelf..

I've thought that i'm going to invest in a Antec Skeleton case later on so it could look like an computer.

There are some people out there that are highly extreme.
I've seen a person that has some sort of shelf that he has slid several motherboards on and connecting them all to separate PSU's.
I think he had 23 or 27 GTX 295's at that time but he used them for folding..
Wonder what would happen if he got bored and joined seti :) 6 machines that would put him the top 3 participants directly :)

Gonna take a picture of my system and put it on my profile later on when i feel for it..

Worlds first computer that broke 50k line on seti@home, and you Bob broke the 40k line so hats of and bows to that accomplishment.

Yea isn't it awesome, and the motherboard is from 2007 running on 8x/8x/8x/8x PCI-E also.. AMD's hypertransport truly rocks and this is the sign of it.
Loki loki AMD, free advertisment.. :P

No, we just fear our emptying pocketbooks and our increasing power demands.... :)

True ... true ... :)

Kind regards Vyper

Vyper, two questions are open..
..wattage and PSU.. ;-)

..you have also the MSI K9A2 Platinum like I have..? ;-)

EDIT:
BTW - mine have 4 x PCIe 2.0 x8 [if 4 GPUs insert] ;-D

Hey

Wattage = unknown..
PSU = Psus , Dual Tagan 900W PSU's with Turbo mode enabled.

With that those 6 rails of 12V is merged into a combined super rail capable of producing 72A in 12V per PSU.

With dual psu i won't be living on the edge and the efficiency ratio is best at around 2/3 of the maximum load.

OK, I finally hit the 50k mark. Phew.

Does that mean I am the second winner or the first loser?

I have a theory - the computer made by Vyper (the one that beat me) is an abomination. Why? Because if God intended for a computer to have 4xPCIe slots, my computer would have four PCIe slots, not three.

Just kidding.
