Thanks EPG, was going to upgrade to a 9500GT 512mb, but will go for a 9500GT 1gb. Well, that maybe a little inbalanced ;) I mean the price increase for the plus mem. maybe better spend on a better GPU with 512 MB. For example a 9600GT had twice the processor cores compared to 9500GT. I think 512MB usually enough, for that level of processor, it can contain the basic Win things, and have enough free. (my desktop absolute basic graphics options in win xp 1024*768*32 using about 40MB) The problem with the memory is usually come up, when BOINC suspend a running GPU task for an another. At this point the first wu remains in the video memory (if MY memory correct); sometimes if you get some more wu, this can repeated and eating a lot of memory. Maybe, but I can get 2x 9500GT 1gb for little more than the cost of a 9600GT & I do need 2 cards to upgrade 2 rigs that currently have onboard graphics. That's the advantage of being a systems builder in that I can get kit cheaper than joe public. |

@Perryjay I've upgraded the drivers on 2 rigs that have the 8400 & 8500. The 8400 is ok, but on the 8500, using the 185.85 &cuda 2.2 drivers, everytime I try to increase the resolution to 1280x800, 3x so far, (19" Widescreen monitor), I get the out of range signal & have to reboot into safe mode to restore it to 1024x768. Did you by any chance have similar problems with your 8500? |

Can you change the refresh rate? |

Can you change the refresh rate? No & on checking, found that NVidia control panel missing. Went into display settings (vista) & when I click on advanced settings, it states that NVidia control panel not running, & that the drivers is mismatched. Found this weird as I had NVidia's website check rig then download correct driver. Once that was done, downloaded all cuda drivers. Not sure if it's the card or drivers at fault. |

Did you by any chance have similar problems with your 8500? Nope, I'm running at 1440x900 on my 19" widescreen with no problem at all. I'm running the same driver you are. Found this weird as I had NVidia's website check rig then download correct driver. Only thing I did different was enter my card manually for the driver rather than let Nvidea find it. Did you by any chance have similar problems with your 8500? Thanks. It looks like cuda is a no-go on these 2 rigs. Reinstalled drivers manually on the 8500 & it's still messed up. On the 8400 rig, after installing drivers, it kept shutting down after 5 mins. Tried again several times, & it still does it. Uninstalled drivers & reinstalled original driver & she's running normal. |
