Make sure "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available" is checked in your Setiathome preferences. If you are running Boinc 6.6.28 be aware that the default has been changed to NOT use the GPU while the computer is in use so you may have to change that option. F. |

Thanks Fred. Just done that, & updated prefs, but still no change. |

Thanks Fred. Just done that, & updated prefs, but still no change. As I understand the unified installer, it should do it all for you (including the app_info.xml - that was a major point of it). It isn't that the host is paying off debt to other projects, is it? I still can't understand why I can't see your GPU here. F. [edit] BTW do you use the local prefs at all? The option to suspend GPU while the computer is in use is there, too. [/edit] |

Thanks Fred. Just done that, & updated prefs, but still no change. No, I don't use local prefs, just web prefs. Using the link you provided, it shows a 9500 (512mb), so don't know how you can't see it. It also shows the 8400's & also an 8300(chipset). Just updating wife's now (9500GT) |

Thanks Fred. Just done that, & updated prefs, but still no change. Sirus if this is the machine http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=4547973 then it shows in the individual "Host details" but not in the general "Your Computers" details. As Fred Mentions, the Local Preferences can override Seti Preferences. IF you had ever "looked" and clicked okay then you would have a "Local Overide." Look for a file called "global_prefs_override.xml" if it is there, then you Peeked and are Caught! LOL If you edit the files using Notepad look for <run_gpu_if_user_active>0</run_gpu_if_user_active> Off and change it to <run_gpu_if_user_active>1</run_gpu_if_user_active> On Or inside Boinc Manager - Advanced Pulldown Menu and the Select Preferences. Once that is open make sure that the top setting match your Seti Preferences. Next would be, to shutdown Boinc and Exit/Close it. Reopen Boinc, run a set of Benchmarks (something has changed) and tell it to manually Update to the Server. The other indication would be if the computer is attached to Multiple Projects the the "global_prefs.xml" gets ammended so that all computer Match. Thanks Fred. Just done that, & updated prefs, but still no change. Yes, that's the host. Can't recall using local prefs, so checked via advanced & clicked "clear", just to be safe. |

With the projects I've been running for the past several months, I would think that they owe debt to seti. |

Hey - something's moving. I can see it now. Still having problems? If so, what does the beginning of your Boinc Manager log look like? F. |

Well, at least now it is showing up on his computers list. The waiting to run message usually only shows up if you have the suspend while computer is in use or if the WU has started but has been preempted by another WU running in high priority. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |

Thanks guys. It's working & already completed a task. Pappa put me on the right track. Even though I cleared the local prefs, it still wasn't working until I checked all prefs - problem was I was using seperate prefs for home & the gpu was disabled. Now working ok & I'm going to try to see if it works with the Geoforce 8300 chipset (9600 Phenom + 4gb ram), if not, I'll upgrade it to a seperate gpu, 9500 or later. N/C board comes out on top once again. |

Sirius According to Nvidia the Lowest Cuda card for Desktops is the 8400GS (which I have one, it is a "Poster Child" at Lunatics ). So while I am attempting to collect questions and answers for a more proper FAQ I keep updating the FAQ thread. The problem is that there are hundreds of message to sort, copy, edit and then cut-n-paste. I have more basic editor windows open than I know what to do with. The nasty animal is that that there are a Hundred things to try. If you did not let Seti discover Cuda without Optimized Applications you are fighing an uphill battle. This does not mention Boinc progress because of issues sometimes complicates matters. Pappa Tips his Hat to the Users that have been there and done that! It is Seti Users that help Seti Users. Sirius That's why I rate the Seti N/C board as one of the best "Tech Help" there is. As for the 8300 chipset, all drivers + unified installed ok, unfortunately, Seti (at that time) kept coming up with no work available, so will keep an eye on it. You never know, it may work (well, if the cuda won't work, at least the opp apps will). As for the other 8400GS, I'm having problems getting the drivers installed (permission problems as it's WHS/Server 2003) - I'll keep plugging away at it. |

Yay, I just saw your first results for CUDA on your Phenom 9500 rig, congrats :) On the other side, I just run my first (and last) CUDA unit on my 8400M video card. Yes, its only 128mb card (not supposed to work with CUDA), but it took 3 more times than one of the C2D T7250@2.00Ghz core. More than that if you consider that its a 37.85 credit against a 47.88 credit WU on CPU. Plus the time one of the cores lost to feed the video card (about 1100 seconds). This is the computer, if anyone is interested. That 3 first WUs run at the same time. Not worthing run CUDA on that low end cards IMO. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?hostid=4736735 |

Cuda not working on the 8300 chipset. Oh well, at least the opp apps are working. Question: - does the amount of ram on a gpu make a big difference? |

I downloaded the lunatic’s unified installer and boinc 6.6.28 and it is finally doing cuda. Hu-rah. Now I will get a better cuda card a 295 if available. |

Firehawk - Cavalli, Fulvio D.
Your third wu, that supposed to run on your GPU, had to fall back because: setiathome_CUDA: device 1 not have enough available global memory. Only found 133890048 setiathome_CUDA: CUDA Device 1 specified, checking... Device cannot be used SETI@home NOT using CUDA, falling back on host CPU processing That's why was that slow. Sirius B. (memory amount): even with 256 MB video ram, some users had problem of running out of it. |

Sirius B. (memory amount): even with 256 MB video ram, some users had problem of running out of it. Thanks EPG, was going to upgrade to a 9500GT 512mb, but will go for a 9500GT 1gb. Another point.... on reading many threads on various boinc forums, it has been stated that there is a difficulty in having both cpu & gpu running the same project. After installing the "Unified", cuda rigs were running Seti on gpu & Ramsey on cpu. Just noticed that they are now running Seti on all cores & I haven't made any changes. Nice. Thank you Lunatics - Great work - Well done. |

My 8500Gt has been running just seti for months. Running two on the CPUs and one on the GPU. Adding the 8500 was like adding an extra core and a half. Even with 512MB of RAM it still gives me the out of memory message every once in awhile.256MB is the minimum that seti can run on, It won't do on anything less and even then it effects the performance of any other graphics you might be doing. I'm not sure if the installer puts in the VLAR killer but it really helps as they give Cuda fits. You should see a real performance boost when you get the 9500.
