why can't i edit my profile?

What error messages do you get?
Did you allow Adblock programs to work on the site?
Did you allow Javascript?
Did you fill in the reCAPTCHAs correctly?

there was simply no "edit profile" bar, it is back now.
i don't know - maybe the server was just out getting a cup of coffee. . . it was about 3-4 am for 'him' - i had no trouble once the "edit profile" bar was back,

Sort of on topic for this thread...

When I edit my profile, press the Update button, then view the results, it is back to the pre-edit version.

Some time later the edits magically appear.

What is the reason for the delay?

All pages around here are cached. So the same thing will happen when you change your avatar, it'll show the old one. Unless you hammer in a couple of browser reloads.
