Good ol' Days! I remember setting up linux and recompiling the kernel to get it optimized then running CLI client. Also dial-up. Happy times.

I'm not sure that I am recalling correctly but I seem to remember that in late 1998 I read about SETI@home getting up and going. Unfortunately, it required a Windows/Intel machine and I was using a Mac. Then (if memory serves) in very early 1999 it became available for Macs but required a newer version of the operating system than I had on my machines (System 7.5 maybe). I got the requisite System not long after but then I found that it was only for Power Mac processors and all I had was 68x00 (mostly on LC III's then. I got my first iMac (a 333MHz blueberry) in May and started up as soon as I could. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? This does not seem to quite square with the Wikipedia article but it might fit in with the alpha and beta releases. Any light that can be shed on this would be appreciated. I asked about this previously but did not get any answers at the time. I'm hoping that the upcoming event will trigger some other people's memories. Thanks and happy anniversary to us. I started with a P66, and took around 80hrs to do a WU! it was a good thing I didn't go much faster as there was no WU cashe and I had to dial up each time to return results and get a new task! I think I also had some hair in those days!!

When I started in '02, I think I was using one of three CPUs: a Pentium III 700MHz, Pentium III 800EB MHz or a Pentium 4 1.6GHz. I remember my PIII 700's motherboard blowing after an electrical rainstorm, so I upgraded from that Slot 1 to a Socket 370 with the 800EB, then about a year later I upgraded to the P4 1.6. I had 4 family members die between 1999 and 2003 so the entire timeframe is still a bit fuzzy to me. ID: 891495 · |

I remember thinking how "cutting edge" it felt at the time... :P How did any of us ever survive dialup, as well??
