Elgin issues us SUPPOSEDLY raccoon proof cans BUT they don't work. Heard a racket outside one night/early morning on garbage day and discovered a Mamma Coon in the garbage bin - tried to chase it out to no avail. Wheeled it out to the curb for pickup and she was still in there. Got a laugh when the pickup man leaped back into his truck when he opened it. Couldn't get the animal control or forestry people to relocate it. Mamma did it on her own. No more problems now - my significant other puts the scooped cat litter into a paper bag and puts it on top of the garbage - Mamma coon seems to leave the can alone now.

Ladies and Gents, boys and girls,

All these stories were wonderful. As I was reading each of them, the mental picture my mind was generating had me laughing 'til tears were running down my face!

First we have Angela's "raccoon raiders". Then there were Richard's "couch potato critters". John Mac chimed in with his furry friend-the racoon that suffers from "ADHD". Then there's mischievous Hal planting a 'coon for his trash collector to find. Is it any wonder that we finding them irresistibly charming. Their ingenuity and resourcfulness never ceases to captivate me.

And last but not least, Angela and her only recently discovered species, named
Homo Sapien Sapien Astro-Physicist. No wonder you have such a way with racoons, the similarities are astonishing!

I love to hear these stories, I know all of us have plenty.

Wait a darn minnit! I didn't plant the darn thing - I gave her an eviction notice and got put down! I darn sure wan't going to call the county sheriff - he'da shot her. If animal control/forestry department won't solve my civillian type problem maybe somebody on the city payout WILL. As it worked out she considers me a slumlord and has moved on.

Sadly, there is very little wildlife in my apartment. :(

There is a mouse who puts in an appearance occasionally. The landlord puts out poison for him, but as soon as he leaves I vacuum it all up.

From time to time, even mice need to be protected from their own gluttony. Besides, I rather enjoy the way he bustles about, so intent with his little plans.

I did have a goldfish. I am not sure if that qualifies as wild.

My neighbour promised to feed him when I was back east last month. Oops. :p

If he lives within your walls the last thing you want is a dead critter there.

I am not sure where he lives. My apartment has mostly solid brick walls.

And I am doing my best to protect him, tho it is sometimes a thankless task!

I've been lurking and enjoying the raccon pics and the stories on this thread. :D

In answer to your question, KLC (I hope it's ok to talk about cats here a moment...since you asked!):

Also, I would like to ask a question. It seems most everybody here has a cat, as do I. Does anyone have a cat who insists on sleeping on top of them.

Isis, our two-year-old resident long-haired kitty-monster, insists on sleeping on my pillow right above my head...as in stretched horizontially and literally wrapped around the top and sides of my head like some weird kind of breathing/purring Russian Fur Hat.

It isn't so bad during the winter, but she insists on it during the summer, also... :P

Of course it is ok to talk about cats here!

Here are some recent family photos:

Stinky helps mommy with the laundry.

Stinky helps daddy with the taxes. (She is a very helpful kitty!)

The beginnings of a bee swarm in our cedar tree. Our neighbor keeps
bees and we love it! We get several swarms in our cedar each year.
(And usually a jar or two of honey around the holidays!)

Our best photo of Thing Two. She is a very shy raccoon.
She likes to hide under the top part of our deck.
She pokes her hands out between the deck and a stair
to accept our humble offerings.

Eric snapped this one last night. Thing One and Puffy share a meal.
