Hello fellow Raccoon Aficionados,

A friend asked me to post an update on my little raccoon family.

Old Threesie only had one baby last year (Fat Baby) and I do not believe that he survived the year. We've seen Old Threesie around so much lately that I don't think she has a nest full of nurslings to attend to. She is our tamest and sweetest raccoon (if one can go so far as to call ANY raccoon sweet!!!) She really is quite old. You can tell by how gingerly she chews food now (bad teeth) and by how chewed up her ears are. Raccoons are nasty snarly beasts and I have noticed that they tend to "lovingly notch" each other's ears when disputes occur. The younger raccoons tend to have more pristine ears... There appears to be quite a strong correlation between age and chewed up ears. I'm sure it is not as good as carbon dating, but hey... they're raccoons! I do the best I can.

Most of the raccoons I have written about previously have either passed on or moved on. Old Threesie is an exception to this. I do not know her longevity secret, but if she ever tells me I will be sure to pass it on.

Thing Two has temporarily disappeared and I strongly suspect she is off nursing somewhere. This will be her first litter. She is a shy raccoon, but I believe that the tremendous calorie demands of nursing will eventually drive her back to the place where yummy food is a sure thing.

Alas, I suspect that Thing One might be the father of Thing Two's babies. It seems that raccoons do not have the same incest taboos that our species has. Eric and I happened across Thing One and Thing Two in an... um... ahem... uh... let's just call it a "loving embrace" some time ago.

Cilantro has not visited for some time... If Cilantro is a "she", we can expect babies. If Cilantro is a "he", it is possible that he met with an unfriendly car, an unfriendly disease, or that he simply moved on to a house where there are better eats (although this is hard to imagine...)

I expect a "baby parade" will occur within the next two months and I will post baby picture when the new generation arrives.

Better than a soap opera, huh? Who needs TV when you have raccoons to love!

Laughingly,
Angela

It's so good to have some fresh news about the 'coons. Thank you for sharing some more.

Will the experiment resume with Eric once the families start appearing?

Sorry, but I don't think that it will. Not sure that junk food is that good for my great great great great great great grandchildren.

I will provided updates from time to time, if requested.

Junk food? I didn't think "franks-and-beans" were classified as "junk food."

She is far prettier. You lose every time (but I'm sure you know that already.)

Very timely post Angela, as the racoons have come out of hibernation here as well. I have to admit I don't have names for mine, but I do follow their activities through the neighbourhood. This provides me great insight into the minds of racoons, and into the garbage of a few of my neighbours.

Going back to a thread many moons ago, I have new "racoon proof" garbage cans here this spring, and so far they are working.

Oh, Mom Misfit is much tougher that Misfit, as we know him, is. :-O I'm sure she has taught him a few things, but she's in a much higher league than he is.

Thanks for the update on the raccoons, Angela, you are right, who needs other entertainment when you live with such a lively bunch. I'm kind of envious, they look so cute. We don't have raccoons here, so I don't know about the snarly thing about them, to me it's hard to believe that such cute creatures aren't just as cute as our little kitties, cuddly and sweet. How do your cats actually react on them, by the way? And how are your kitties doing?

As for Eric eating junk food, well, they do that, the guys, eat junk food and drink beers. Maybe the raccoons will be more agreeable if you pour them a few beers? That could be a good testing item, beers, will they drink it or do they know that it just will make them fat with beer bellies? The result on Eric is already known, no need to put a beer in front of him to see if he'll drink it or not, we all know he will. ;-D

Yes, but as you are aware of, I lost everything on my old laptop, address lists, dates to remember, all, including your birthday, and of course Eric and Angela's wedding anniversary day.

A late happy anniversary, Eric and Angela!

Raccoons are not at all like cats. Their looks are quite deceiving.

Our cats are both indoor kitties and they generally ignore the raccoons on the patio.

Our cats are both fine. W.C. is upstairs shredding papers in Eric's den and Stinky Lou sounds like she is chasing a wild pen across the kitchen floor. Those pens are tricky. Just when Stinky has one cornered, it somehow manages to get away!

We don't have raccoons here, I don't know anything about them at all except what you have told us here and I've seen the lovely pics you have posted with them.

Good the kitties don't get into fights with them then, it would turn out ugly when the raccoons are such nasty little creatures.

Yes, kitties are experts in making their toys slip away from them, I've noticed that with my cats and latest Bouncer Jupiter, even her fur mice can manage to get away from her, just as she had it caught. It's so funny to watch. Now my Bouncer Jupiter is a mature 6 years old, soon 7 years, lady, she doesn't play as much as she did before, she has more dignity now, she doesn't fool around so much anymore. Now she just likes to sit and look out of the window and take a nap in between, and of course come up to me and be cuddled. And of course lie on top of me when I'm lying in bed and lie in my lap when I watch tv.
