If Obama and the trolls currently in charge of Congress have their way with this act our electric bills will take a several times huge jump. Here's what my rural electric coop has to say about it:
http://www.lpea.com/

Read em and weep. This could mean the end of my participation for one.

California already had mandated clean energy reinvestment. My power bills were in the $2-300 range 5 years ago. When I max my computer farm my monthly bill went to a high of about $500 2 years ago, $600 in the summer with A/C on. In Jan of this year my bill jumped to $1,200. Needless to say that is why my RAC is down. I have had to cut back on energy use, so half of my farm is off. Even with half the farm off my bill is still in the $6-700 range. I would have to stop crunching too, if the bill passes as is.

One of the bill's many as-is problems is the tax proceeds can be spent for anything at all. So the tax will simply disappear into more pork.

Too bad You didn't live in either the Low Desert or the High Desert here in California, You could use a swamp cooler and save money, A heat pump w/an electric heat strip for outdoor temps below 40F would also do the job too possibly. How many PCs are You running there? I'm running one.

I had 16 (all but 4 quads) running full time. Down to 4 quads and 2 duos full time, Plus 2 additional quads part time.

The PC I'm running right now is a Quad Core Q9300 with a BFG GTX295 inside and the Q9300 cpu is overclocked to 3.51GHz, The ram runs @ 468MHz*7.5. I have an almost identical PC that when It has some ram runs Its QX6700 B1(ES) cpu @ 3.52GHz, the ram on this PC has run at 440MHz*8.0, Both use the ASUS P5K Deluxe motherboard and I use Patriot Viper PC2-8500 ram in PC1(Q9300), PC2(QX6700) has run the same ram of course, One day soon I'll get some ram for PC2 as My latest electric bill was for $45.00 this month(3/17/09-4/17/09). :)

This is why I had to switch off my farm. My energy bills more than doubled (nearly tripled) in a 6 month period. I've done everything else I can to bring my consumption under control, low energy lighting, better insulation, yet I still pay more now than I did 2 years ago.

Same here. When I got my current bill, I nearly died of shock - £1310. Fortunately. I demanded a check & it was found that the meter was faulty, but after revision, bill still just over a grand.

It will be be all down to the next bill & if that's still high enough, will have to shut down farm completely, & just run the wife's & my rig, & have the home server run at weekends for backups.

I don't wish to make the fatcats any richer!!!

All these large bills, Some here have either smaller bills than I do or they have what almost amounts to FREE electricity as they have photovoltaic panels on their roof and an inverter or so tied to the grid, Here in My case I just took simple steps like sealing the gap between the wall and the outlet which would normally be with caulk, But since I don't have that I did the next best thing I used scotch brand cellophane tape instead, I once bought a caulking gun and a tube of caulk only to discover that the caulk was spoiled and the gun was unusable after trying to force the caulk out and I put outlet covers on all the outlets(they plug into the sockets and are normally meant to keep a baby from getting a shock or worse), Also I use 14w CFL lights all over the place and never in pairs and only when I need to read something, So I got a $45.00 electric bill(30.28500 British Pound; 33.92100 Euro). :) Now €1800=$2387.90138 US Dollars and £1310=$1946.50829 US Dollars, I got these figures from Here.

Plus I live in a mobilehome and I have had over half of the windows here in My house replaced with very efficient dual pane retrofit High efficiency vinyl windows(better than aluminum, As plastic doesn't transmit heat as much as aluminum and most overclockers should know this already), I have had 4 of 7 windows replaced at either $330 or $370 each(depends on the size of the window). I'm about as Green as I can get here where I live presently as I can't afford the low income solar(photovoltaic) system that is given to those with incomes like mine as I paid for My house with cash and didn't get a mortgage from FHA or something like the FHA or have any sort of Government backed financing(crap).

Some of these posts must be purposeful obfuscation. This thread isn't about how many hotshot processors or how fast we're going broke today. This thread is meant to make you mad. So that you will write your congresscritter in opposition to the fed doubling or quadrupling your already usurious electric bill!

See the backgroud from our electric coop here:
http://www.lpea.com/

Very Important: The proposed energy tax bill makes no restrictions on how YOUR energy tax money can be used. Your dollars could end up funding another octomom instead of responsible energy research.

I swear someone's going to be jealous of Me or maybe not, I don't know, But last month I used 475.00 KW of electricity. Gas was 25.00 THRM's used last month or $25.68, The total of My energy bill was $70.68 this month with the 20% CARE Discount, Without the 20% Discount It might be about $85 or so.

1st quarter 2009. Regardless of how much an individual or community group complain, there is just too much profit in the energy industry for us to be taken notice of.

So i agree Sirius more than 400 pounds per month is way too much.
Now i pay €166 per month.
My Homecinema system uses 1000 watts alone but i love it.

But of course this thread is about energy bill quadrupling that may happen only in the USA, if we voters don't stifle our "representatives" in Washington DC. Independent of the profit potential in the energy industry. Its guaranteed to happen if we individuals do nothing.

Gotta say, I am amazed by how much compute power some of you have, and have often wondered how you pay the electric bill when my one and only home computer costs me about $20 per month for the electricity to run it 24x7x52.
