It seem Seti@Work is now blockaded as they've said below:

Berkeley seems to have blocked our IP address so there will be no statistics update for the rest of the month until I work something out using the updated-once-a-day XML data.

Quite right too!

Shame it's taken an IP block before getting round to doing the job more nice-ly...

More of a shame is that it's wasted Matt's time having to diagnose the problem from the s@h servers side.

So were they the problem causing Seti to be DOSed? I guess He'll have to see what He can do work with what He can get(xml data I think), Now going from once every 3 hours to once every 24 hours, Whoa, that's heavy.

It is interesting to note that their site news says they were blocked on Jan 15, 2008 and Jul 7, 2008 as well -- so this is the third time they've been blocked.

It's also noteworthy how slow some people can be to learn when they're being selfish. The site says they're starting to get to grips with the daily XML.

Now? After two warnings?

IIRC way back to an earlier IP block of some unnamed stats site, Matt was unaware that the I/F being used to get the stats was officially sanctioned by BOINC and had to release the block. I have a feeling the I/F has been depreciated in the couple of years in between. If that is indeed the case then it would only be right to work with them to get them on the new way.

What was being done was web page scraping. That is very CPU intensive and very database expensive for s@h. Hence why xml stats are offered instead, and why they are only generated once every 24 hours.

The xml provided stats have been available and in use for a very long time now...

(Strange how all the other stats sites use the xml without problem, and since a long time ago...)

Happy crunchin',
Martin
