Is (or will) BOINC/SETI@home compatible with ATI Radeon cards? I.e. can i somehow use the GPU in those cards for boosting my creds?

Not yet. SETI only supports CUDA because nVidia agreed to help code the CUDA application for SETI. SETI Staff have been waiting for AMD to help code an application for their ATi Radeon series, but so far AMD has been quiet.

When OpenCL is completed, BOINC may support this open standard which has provisions for using graphics cards for math operations using a standardized code-base, allowing SETI to support ATi without having to know AMD's proprietary coding language.

BOINC 6.8 is supposed to sport ATI support, although at this time it is unknown whether that's using ATI's CAL or OpenCL. The developers want to decide upon that once they get their hands on the hardware ATI promised to send them.

The last time I spoke with Rom (Wednesday), none of the cards had arrived yet.

In the mean time, people can use their ATI GPU at Milkyway@Home.

Thanks for the quick reply :)

Any idea or guess when this is to happen? Thinking of buying a new PC, and AMD/ATI-fan yes i am

Real hard to say. Its taken forever to get a stable BOINC v6.6.x client released (which still hasn't happened). All I can say is that it will probably be released when it is ready, but I know that doesn't help much. It can easily be months or more.

My guess is we may not have ATI cards supported until at least the start of next year. You can run them on Milkyway@home currently using a modified app or folding at home (which is a non-BOINC project)

Can't they just beg Stanford University for some help?;)
Folding@home is working for both cards so the easy way is just to join them.

At the moment I only know 2 projects, Milkyway@home and Folding@home, that can use ATI cards.

You'd think that's the easy way, but as far as I understand it, ATi helped Folding@Home code their app, so logically ATi/AMD would be the best one to go to.

As far as I understand it, a developer of ATI helped FAH out, but without full support from AMD/ATI. He just did it in his 'free time'.

Anyway, BOINC 6.8 will have ATI GPU detection (with support from AMD/ATI in developing it), although no one knows if this is in the form of CAL or OpenCL. To be continued.

Sorry OzzFan, I was a bit unclear.
I ment it was the easy way if you wanted to put you ATI card
to good use.
