Hello,

First of all let me say I was happy to find an upgraded version still kicking out there after being a part of this in the early 90'tees, and installed the client and linked it to Seti@home yesterday.

But I was not happy to not get the graphics to show, I followed the instructions, but there IS no way to 'open a graphics window'. I took the time to go through the folders in the install directory to see if the program was in there, but no.

From the guide:

We'll now go through the various settings. The first one is Graphics preferences, a popup menu whose choices are Classic, Panels, Minalist and Custom. This controls the layout of the graphics:

I have been all over all of the settings in all view modes after modifying in preferences to show grafics on the webpage preferences and updating several times,
but no, there is no popup for the graphics.

' In a few seconds, the graphics will change to reflect your new preferences. ' It sais on your guide. well, I have no graphics window.

I was trying this for like an hour late last night and got really upset and removed the program, I remember liking the graphics in it when I used it back in the 90'tees, so please tell me what I did wrong.

Am I doing something wrong, or do I have a 'lite' client? I downloaded 6.4.7 for Windows.

Best regards,

Kai.

Looking at your tasks and the one that was finished, it ran on your GPU. The GPU (CUDA) application does not do graphics or a screen saver... you're using the GPU on the videocard to crunch with. It can't do both crunching and show graphics. See the CUDA FAQ in my signature for more information about CUDA and GPU crunching.

The graphics can be run on Seti Enhanced 6.03 and Astropulse v5 5.03 tasks, not on the Seti Enhanced 6.08 tasks. When work is downloaded from Seti it will be appointed the application it should use automatically, so you can't just change work you have from GPU to CPU either.

Last, graphics can be seen from Simple BOINC Manager -> click the middle graphic if it says "Graphics available", or Advanced BOINC Manager -> Tasks tab -> Select a running task -> click Show graphics button.

Sure you can. Something also handled in my CUDA FAQ:

Can't I turn the damn thing off?
Yes, you can. In Seti, go to your Project preferences, edit them, take the check mark off of "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available", save the changes. Then open BOINC manager->Advanced view->Projects tab->select Seti->click Update.

Any work that is still appointed to the GPU will still have to be done or you have to manually abort it. In the case of Seti CUDA work, this is all work appointed to the 6.08 application (BOINC Manager->Advanced view->Tasks tab, Application column). You will not receive new CUDA work, though.

(P.S: These blue words are links you can click. ;-))

Ah, you rule :)

Then I have another request, is there any way for me to have 2 clients running at the same time on the same computer? one on cuda and one on my dualcore? Is the program copyrighted? or can I edit it a tiny bit so I can run two?

(PS: ':)' is me laughing when I read your PS :P)

Yes and no. Not clients. But that's a terminology thing.
BOINC is considered the core client.
Seti is seen as the science application.

So no for running two clients, as BOINC will check if there's a copy of itself running already and then stop the second one. (Although that isn't entirely true, it is possible to do this with the help of a command line argument on the core client. I don't think that is what you're after, though)

one on cuda and one on my dualcore?

By default, BOINC will try to run on both the CPU and GPU. But BOINC 6.4.7 has major problems with the client side scheduler, which takes care of scheduling what work should start first. This is being fixed in the new upcoming BOINC 6.6, although I don't dare to say when it is finally going to be released. My tea leaves aren't as fresh anymore after earlier readings. ;-)

Is the program copyrighted? or can I edit it a tiny bit so I can run two?

Both BOINC and Seti@Home are Open Source, which means you can download the source code and toy with it. But It's not that easy... And as I said above, the change is coming. Just wait.

(PS: ':)' is me laughing when I read your PS :P)

Good, laughing is good for you. I said it as there are plenty of people who do not know that you can click those words and that you then get 'transported' to another page, where things may be explained (better).

Ok, thank you.

To clearify I would like to run two clients and forsaw (is that correct spelling?) that the client would shut it self down if I try to run multiple instances with f.ex two program folders.

And a command line argument makes the whole problem not a problem at all.. so is there a documentation of the command lines?

Sorry for my lack of investigation as Im currently at work and just ask. :P

By now you must've found my BOINC FAQs already... if you still didn't, I'll be very cross with you. :-D

Another great source of information is the BOINC Wiki at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Main_Page. What you are looking for is in Advanced client configuration, while you also best check the Boinccmd tool and the client configuration file (cc-config.xml) (which should not be confused with the advanced client configuration).
