Message 881495 - Posted: 2 Apr 2009, 1:40:23 UTC

On April 1st I was checking the messages in BOINC since I wasn't receiving any WUs and as if by magic this this gem appeared:

Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:00 AM CST|SETI@home|Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. Requesting 45058 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Message from server: No work can be sent for the applications you have selected
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Message from server: No work is available for SETI@home Enhanced
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Message from server: No work is available for Astropulse
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Message from server: You have selected to receive work from other applications if no work is available for the applications you selected
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:06 AM CST|SETI@home|Message from server: Sending work from other applications

Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:08 AM CST|SETI@home|Started download of ap_06fe09ad_B0_P1_00175_20090331_11312.wu
Wed 01 Apr 2009 08:07:55 AM CST|SETI@home|Finished download of ap_06fe09ad_B0_P1_00175_20090331_11312.wu

I found it hilarious since it basically means:

Client: Give me some WUs, I'm starving!
Server: All right, feast on this Astropule WU. It ought to fill your belly for a while.
Server: Oh by the way: We have no WUs for either MultiBeam or Astropulse so, according to your settings, we're sending you a WU from another application.
Server: Enjoy your AstroPulse WU!
User: What the....??

Confusing and self contradictory. I am sure that is because I am using the optimized clients from Lunatics but the April 1st date made me wonder if it was a prank.

Moral of the story: Have some coffee/strong green tea in the morning and remember your own setup.

Epilogue: The WUs are coming in and my Core2 T7300 (2.0 GHz) crunches roughly 1 AstroPulse WU every 27 hours and 1 MultiBeam WU takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Go optimized applications!

I get that a lot, So It's no April 1st joke, I ignore It as It seems to be harmless and It does mean something needs fixing somewhere.

The code probably reads like:

Find some AP work.

Still need work?
Find some EN work.

Still need work?
Find some work.

If work appears betweek the last two attempts to fetch work, then you will fail to get any AP work, you will fail to get any Enhanced work, and then you actually get some random work.

That is the most logical explanation but I still find it odd that the first two lines read as a normal WU request and a WU delivery but the next 5 lines flat out contradict it. Shouldn't the server keeps its mouth shut since it is actually delivering a WU?

SuperJoker: Are you running the optimized applications as well?

Actually, it is probably more like:

If (! Find some AP work)
Complain

Still need work?
If (! Find some SETI Enhanced work)
Complain

Still Need work?
Find some work.

Yep and only MB, This is an AP free zone. And right now It's one Q9300(@ 3.51GHz) PC doing all the work, Which is soon to be joined by a BFG GTX 295 video card that I recently won on ebay for $480.00 delivered($465+15->UPS).
