With all the comments I've seen re AP WUs taking to long, and questions about how not to run AP, I was wondering if the default prefs could be set with AP not selected? That way, a user would need to actually want to run AP before getting any WUs.

Also, maybe a user's RAC could be somehow figured in with the system requirements for AP. I mean, it isn't likely that a user with 30K total credit in four years and a RAC of 3.68 is going to complete an AP WU, and a RAC of 1.85 has no chance :(

I mention this because I have AP WUs that have been waiting for validation for two and three months.

Not trying to flame anyone here... Just trying to get a wingie that can run AP ;)

The vast majority of users are the set and forget types. They rarely look at the Boinc manager, never, if ever, visit the forums and would never know to turn on AP. There are only a couple thousand users of the 150,000 users that use the forums. That is why the option was defaulted to on.

The project does have minimum requirements to decide who to send AP to. Boinc also as a mechanism to limit who receives a WU if the system isn't available enough to crunch work within deadlines.

Most of the complaints are not from people who can't do the work on time, but from a small vocal minority of RAC watchers who want instant gratification and faster validation of the work which is not necessarily a criteria considered by the project.

Many users only visit the forums when something goes wrong. If you default AP to off, and nothing went wrong, AP would not get done.

...which goes to show that you shouldn't use the forums as an indicative sample of all SETI participants. People who visit forums are simply the vocal minority.
