What Went Wrong With This Task?

Had an AP task not validated today and wasn't sure what really happened - this was a task that had apparently timed out and was sent to me. In the interim the overdue user apparently completed the task but the system did not reject it as being already validated. I occassional notice tasks that had overdue results accepted but credit was also granted to me despite being the third validated result. The reason why I noticed this one was that the To Completion times for all of my current tasks more than doubled from what had been early this morning and is therefore completely unreasonable. See: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1188914492 This is not as much whining and crying about not being given credit as the penalties applied for returning invalid results. Thanks. |

The WU is kept around until either all outstanding tasks for that WU are returned, or have timed out, AND either the WU is validated, or has too many errors/total tasks. BOINC WIKI |

That was fast but I don't think that I correctly explained - someone else had missed the deadline so the task was sent to me as a wu_2. While processing this task the overdue user had finally reported their result meaning that my result was now the third reported for the same task. I therefore was an outstanding task for that work unit. My recent experience with this type of situation has been that all 3 users received credit. Thanks |

If a user misses a deadline, they only have to return it before the re-send gets returned, and all three users will receive credit for doing the work. |

Thanks but that is exactly what did not happen in this case - my work was tagged invalid which apparently forced the To Completion to increase by a factor of 2.2 and seprately received zero credit. Am not as concerned with the reduction of the daily quota as I have already made that up. If I have a problem with producing bad results I also want to get that stopped or corrected but that does not appear to be the situation here. Thanks. |

If in only happens on rare occasions, it is probably not worth worrying about. If it happens frequently, you may have a hardware problem of some sort, and the two leading problems are overheating and overambitious ovberclocking. BOINC WIKI |

OK, thanks for the help. I will treat this as a one-time aberration similar to how Duke is playing in the second half or Marcus Denmon's 50+ footer to end the half. For the record - no overclocking here and no indication of overheating. To minimize the chance for overheating or other issues when I do something graphics or CPU intensive I even go into preferences to cut back on number of processors being used or suspend activity completely. Can't guarantee that I never forgot but it has become routine. |
