I'm attempting to get BONIC configured so that I can participate in the Seti Project but every time I try to connect to Seti@home a small popup window up saying the URL is wrong. I'm using the following URL

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

How can this configuration resolved??

Thanks -- Rick

What version of the BOINC program are you using? and what OS?

Try detaching the Seti@home project from the client, then re-adding it from the Tools > Attach to Project Menu. Set@home should be listed in the projects (you should not need to enter the address manually).
The address you have given is correct, if it still does not work after the above, make sure that your internet connection is working fully and you do not have a firewall which may interfere with the BOINC program.

Other than that, it could be a problem with the Seti Servers.

BIONIC version is 6.4.7. My OS is Windows XP Pro. I'm a teacher and I'm trying to connect through my classroom computer via the school distict's network. The exact error message is as follows:

"The URL you supplied is not that of a BONIC-based project"

Thanks - Rick

This problem might be caused by the database problems they are having. Wait until they get it sorted out and try again.

I'm a teacher and I'm trying to connect through my classroom computer via the school distict's network.

Also, ask the ICT department of your school whether or not they have blocked Project addresses used by BOINC. Ask them for permission to use BOINC (not BONIC, not BIONIC).

Most school computers in the UK are not able to run BOINC based projects because of the internet proxy filters they use. Here in Northern Ireland, I have been campaigning for years for the all the school computers to run Seti or another BOINC based project because for most the day no one uses them, but due to the filtering system and without the government support (they own the system) its just not possible.

The district uses a filtering system called St.Bernard iPrism. When a connection is blocked, you receive a message screen stating so as well as a category the blocked site falls under. In this case, I'm not entirely convinced it's the filter that's at fault.

Due to my lack to time to deal with this issue, I'm now trying to delete the BOINC software from my computer. When I attempted to do so a couple of days ago, it screwed up my computer so bad it wouldn't restart. Restored the system with the BOINC software in place and now the computer works fine.

For the time being, I'll just leave things as they are.

Thanks -- Rick

Most message screens are shown via a web browser because they are assuming you're browsing to a site that's not allowed. BOINC uses the same port web browsers do (TCP port 80), but its not a web browser; it does not display error message screens telling you why you've been blocked.

Since you have the correct URL for SETI@Home, the only logical conclusion is that it is being blocked by some sort of filter.

How did you try to remove BOINC? Did you use the Add/Remove programs applet in Control Panel?

If memory serves me correctly, I used an uninstaller called Smarty Uninstaller Pro. As you may already know, this software goes beyond the basic Windows uninstaller. It actually searches your hard drive (even the registry) for remaining bits of the software being uninstalled.

I've had nothing but good results while using this uninstaller software. Possibly in this particular instance, it was too effective ;-)

Thanks any ways for your help!

If you want to completely uninstall BOINC 6, then just follow all the correct steps for the clean up.

The problem I've had with uninstall utilities (since the days of Windows 3.1) is that they can't possibly be programmed with the plethora of installers out there to log properly all the chances an installer does to a system.

More likely Smarty Uninstaller Pro does not know about software that creates addtional accounts to sandbox their running environment such as BOINC and Google's Chrome browser.

Anyway, if you follow the link Jord gave, it should help get it removed without issue, if you're still interested in getting it off your system.

Sure, its a comprehensive list of files and registry entires, but what about the sandboxed user accounts that were created? I see nothing in your log that shows the removal of such accounts. The Smarty Uninstaller Pro seems to know nothing about this new type of install, which is exactly the problem I've had with "uninstaller" software. Its much easier to simply use the provided uninstaller that most software come with, because they know what they installed and what they changed, and can safely put everything back without ruining the system. Sure, they may leave behind a few bits, but at least they don't render your system unbootable simply because the installer removed more than it was supposed to (or didn't remove everything it thought it did).

Why don't you give the provided uninstaller a try?
