Yep, launches at 7:49pm Pacific time Friday evening. Definitely keeping an eye on this. If Kepler finds a ton of potentially habitable planets, then the next step is to build a large space interferometer so we can study the atmospheres of these planets and see if they could support life. On that topic, I had an interesting thought. It's simple enough to look at an atmosphere and say there may be life based on the amount of oxygen and other biological gases...but what about artificial gases? For instance, our own atmosphere had a ton of CFCs (Freon) in it for decades. Would it be plausible to search for artificial gases such as CFCs? That would prove that not only is there life, but a civilization too. You will be assimilated...bunghole! |

I read about that scope in my newspaper this morning. Sometimes newspapers have quite a lot of interesting stuff. |
