This is forever, it seems, getting on my bone, pure frustration at lagging behind the current installation of Boinc

I managed to update the Ubuntu 8.10 preinstalled boinc client and manager, by opening up the backport to a version that is some way behind what is posted on this site. To my annoyance, they, whoever posts updates on linux, haven't updated the repositories to be able to download and update to the current version

the version, that I have at the moment is 6.2.14, which is not using the active HT on my cpu, and is only crunching one work unit at a time

Does anyone know for definitely and once and for all, how to install the .sh file that is posted on this site. The information given on this site is vague to say the least

What do I need to do now? It says "use /home/richie/BOINC/run_manager to start BOINC"

From your commandline, give the command:

/home/richie/BOINC/run_manager

to start the Boinc manager that will then start up the Boinc client and so on.

However, there are far better ways to do all this...

The install script has installed Boinc into "/home/richie/BOINC". You can run it from there fine, but you need to do a few other bits to get it to run each time you log in...

Easier is to enable the "multiverse" repositories and use the Ubuntu installer to install the version of Boinc available there. That installation runs properly as a 'service' on a separate dedicated system user account. If you want a more recent version, you can then move across the more recent Boinc files from your "/home/richie/BOINC" to just update the Boinc non-project files.

... I have a script that can be modified to do this if you're interested...

Note that Ubuntu have a very good policy for what is permitted on their repositories, and with what cut-off date. The more recent Boinc versions are usually far too "experimental" to be acceptable! Then again, Boinc is being very rapidly developed...

Good luck,
Martin

Sorry to sound a noob on this matter, and I would love to have the script that you have. I am assuming it can be modified using the text editor?

If I'm not mistaken the Linux version of boinc should not change your data file location. The data file changing was done to make BOINC compatible with WinVista. Linux doesnt have this problem and you should be able to find the data files under you project folder

Linux does do sandboxing as well.

From http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Ubuntu:
What the installer does

1. Puts the BOINC binaries (boinc, boinccmd and boincmgr) in /usr/bin .

2. Creates a configuration directory /etc/boinc-client containing files cc_config.xml, global_prefs_override.xml, gui_rpc_auth.cfg, and remote_hosts.cfg] (It is a Debian convention that such files live under /etc)

3. Creates the working directory /var/lib/boinc-client/ for BOINC data files and the slots and projects directories. Also creates links from this directory to the files in /etc/boinc-client

4. Creates a user named boinc. For improved security, this boinc user owns the BOINC working directory and all the data files and sub-directories created under the working directory.

5. Creates the daemon "init" script, /etc/init.d/boinc-client, and a set of configuration options for the daemon at /etc/default/boinc-client

6. Sets up the daemon to autostart at boot time.

The above considers you used the package manager to install BOINC.

Because the terminal was de-functional kept on saying something about 0440 etc

A quick reboot to the recovery mode and a chmod 0440 /etc/home....... repaired it

I used the command, but version 6.2.14 is still running, so have I to stop this? If so, how?

Programing is not my forte

Doesn't Ubuntu as well as KuBuntu have A installer that will up grade the BOINC Client similar to the windows installer?

Thanks

Matthew

Not until the repositories actually upgrade their version.
