I watched a little dragracing last Sunday. I understand that they have shortened dragracing courses from 1/4 mile (1320 feet or 402.4 meters) to 1,000 feet (305 meters) in order to reduce terminal speed and lengthen the slowdown track, right? Some funny cars got up to about 280 mph (451 kph) in about 4.1 seconds for that distance, but the motorcycles were much, much slower, about 180 mph (290 kph) and 7.0 seconds. I can see a little (perhaps 20 percent) disparity but don't understand why so much between motorcycles and cars.

This is what I was getting at in the BMW remark. Every racing team cheats, just like pretty much every athlete takes some form of performance enhancer (hgh, roids, etc). You'd be a fool not to believe such. When teams/people get caught, they hang their head in shame and everyone around them acts shocked even though they're probably doing much worse things in their own camp.

I think you have to be a little careful, when making comments about McClaren- Mercedes and cheating. They were basically found guilty by a 'kangaroo court', for starters and by accepting 'guilt', saved themselves a fortune - it was the cheapest option. Lets not forget, that this was based on the actions of a few employees of the respective teams; other teams were also found to have information that they should not have had. Renault being one of them, suffered no penalty at all. There is nothing quite like a level circuit, eh? Bending rules is one thing, but on the track, the sort of 'strategies' employed by a certain former F1 WDC, who drove for an Italian team, beggared belief! There again, he'd probably learned a few things from a Brazilian driver and a French driver and became worse than the pair of them put together.

As for me, aside from my almost annual pilgrimage to Silverstone this year (which will probably be my last visit to the British GP) I won't be taking much interest in F1. The almost constant rule changes, have stifled development and increased costs hugely and driven away the fans. Its a bit rich for the idiots in charge of F1 (Barmy Bernie and Mad Max), pushing through changes to make F1 cheaper, when it was their constant rule changes that pushed-up the costs. One year, you have a 3000cc V10 (as was the norm in recent years), the next year it has to be a 2400cc V8 and its not a case of just cutting off 2 cylnders; the only parts you could keep common, would be pistons, rings, liners (if any), valves, water pump (?), hydraulic pump, possibly the con-rods and some bearings - the rest goes in the scrap bin! Thats waste on a massive scale. The reason the Ford-Cosworth engine, was so successful, was due to it being developed over a period of time and virtually being in continual development, as were, in latter years, the Honda and Renault turbo-charged engines. Besides, I'd sooner listen, to a Ferrari V12 howl or the shriek from a Honda turbo, than the demented buzzing from a 2.4l V8!

Sorry for the rant, but the bosses of F1 are, to me, little different to Nero - they've also got their fiddles going and its the sport that is getting burned.


Don't take life too seriously, as you'll never come out of it alive!

I understand its all about sponsorship - or the lack thereof. Quebec sports fans are very fickle, and with M. Villeneuve gone, they are gone too. The Big Bucks found something better to spend it on. Speaking of which [off topic] I see the Habs are for sale, asking about $350 million. [/off topic]
