I have a strange issue with some S@H WU`s

every now and then I will get a WU that will just fail to kick off it shows in Boinc manager as using cpu time but never leaves 0.000%. I also have WU`s sometimes stall after they have been running for a period of time.

Result 09ja09ab.24972.22567.12.8.123_1 has been stuck at that 90% for ages... according to boinc manager cpu time is a little under 15hrs and the time to completion is going up not comming down.

I just had cause to ssh in to the box and do a little file management unrelated to S@H and I just checked boinc manager and the stuck WU has started all on its own.

Any suggestions ?

I also experience this exact problem, but only on one system, which runs FreeBSD 7.1-STABLE, boinc 6.2.14 and s@h 5.27. Two other systems running 7.1-PRERELEASE and 6.3-STABLE but same boinc and s@h do not.

I had this problem on 5.2.7 and 6.2.14 and fixed it, but I don't remember which of the following two items did the trick:

1. Under make config when installing boinc, de-select the download linux science apps.
2. Remove the string idprio 31 from the boinc startup script in /usr/local/etc/rc.d.

I'm assuming:

a. You're running FreeBSD.
b. You installed it with Xwindows support.
c. You installed the graphical interface of boinc.

1. Start xwindows.
2. In one of the terminal windows, type the command boinc-gui.
3. Move your mouse to the upper left of the screen and left click.

And you can optionally:

d. Install gnome or kde for a more windows like experience.

Hi Supervlb.

I have removed that string as suggested and boinc has been running for a few days, so far so good. I will post again in a weeks time just to let you know for sure if that did the trick as the problem was fairly random.

Regards

I seem to have hit yet another brick wall on this, the second machine just does not seem to want to grab any work at all.

I am having a look from boinc for windows remotely to this machine, and it shows the correct project account etc but then says in the status column communication deferred 23:37 and counting down. I left it to try again by itself and it came back with deferred for 1hr or so then it has jumped back to nearly 24hrs

There is a glitch with the AMD CPU's that cause them to hang. Have you tried using an Optimized app. The Optimized app does not hang. I'm not sure if it only hangs in Windows or includes Linux.

There is no native Seti application for the FreeBSD platform, so that is why you won't get work. No executable == no work.

Install one of Dotsch's FreeBSD applications, which comes with app_info.xml file, and you should be home free.

grrr this is starting to get annoying been at this for days trying this n that and the next thing.

I need a simple explanation as to why a machine that was running boinc pretty much ok has suddenly hit a brickwall and will do nothing.

It just stops with this

Now someone suggested there is no native app for freebsd ... /usr/ports/astro/boinc-setiathome-enhanced

seems fairly native to me, and was working just fine.

That someone was me and if you'd followed the link I gave you, you could have seen it wasn't there. Whatever was there in the first place must have been put in there by you.

So just follow the second link I gave you. Download and unpack the FreeBSD SPARC64 6.03 version, then add the binary and the app_info.xml file in your \projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu\ directory and restart BOINC.

Checking your system though, it seems you (or someone else) has detached it from Seti.

I have never downloaded an app manually and installed it for seti, all I have ever done with the system was portsnap fetch update portsnap extract then from the boinc-setiathome-enhanced was do a make install clean command.

Yes the machine has become detached, I was trying to nail down this random issue with some WU`s stalling at 0.000%. I happened to have a spare machine I which I could install freebsd 7.1 amd64 edition on to, I installed boinc the way I had before on the working system and ran in to this platform error, so I took a look at the working system, check the config etc restarted boinc then it also stated to run in to this platform not found error.

As for you previous link .... I was looking for something that was for amd64 freebsd, using a sparc64 ver did not occur to me.

I will go give it a try and see what happens

Close but no cigar,

tried both the sparc64 and dragonfly bsd i386 app_info.xml and binaries, both get past the platform not found error but all WU fail with computation error.

Can you report them please, so we can see what the actual error is?
Or can you post the messages with the error lines in them?

There is native Seti app for FreeBSD, but it needs to be build from sources from FreeBSD ports. See here:
http://www.freshports.org/astro/boinc-setiathome-enhanced/
and here:
http://people.freebsd.org/~pav/boinc.html

PS. Before you install anything from ports system, please update it:
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/ports-using.html
Though, I don't know about Astropulse, I use FreeBSD only for MB, because of PIII CPU :)
