just tried 6.6.4 on Syphilis.

not a problem free install in my case...

stopped boinc and made sure that the science applications closed down at the same time.
ran the install for 6.6.4
restarted boinc
boinc launched and opened up
it opened up on the tasks tab with no tasks showing and froze (history repeating itself again - same behaviour as with 6.6.3)
i watched it for a while and it remained static with no change, wasn't able to select any other tab
eventually boinc closed itself down and the icon in the sys tray vanished
checked the tasks menu and science apps were running (five this time)
rebooted system to see if same events occurred
boinc launched and again froze, task manager indicates 5 science apps running....
boinc closed itself down again...

re-installed 6.4.5 on Syphilis

also tried installing 6.6.4 on Scurvy
boinc behaved the same as on Syphilis except that there were no ap wus on Scurvy so could not confirm 5 science apps running...

taken Scurvy back to 6.4.5

I'm having the exact same problems as you are with 6.6.4 on my main rig. I just reinstalled to get the cuda client running on this machine and uninstalled the previous version (6.2.x) and ran ccleaner to get all the fragments left and installed 6.6.4 and the cuda files. It seems to be doing work, but I can't click on the tasks tab or it crashes out.

The word is (I haven't tested this myself, but it came from a reliable source) that you can use an earlier version of the BOINC manager such as v6.5.0 in conjunction with the later clients/daemons to let you see the task list again.

You don't have to stop BOINC. Assuming you've still got the installation package for the earlier version, run it again as an "administrative installation".

The easiest way is to navigate to the folder where you keep your downloads in Windows Explorer: then open the 'Run...' box from the Windows Start button, and drag the icon for the BOINC installer into the box. That'll fill in the name and path of the program: then after the end of everything that's been filled in, type a space, followed by /a

Mine looks like

"C:\My Download Files\boinc_6.5.0_windows_intelx86.exe" /a

Click OK, and the BOINC installer will start, but with a different set of options from usual. All it will do is to unpack all the various files BOINC needs into a set of folders - by default, on your first available network drive (it's designed for loading up a server), but you can tell it to save to your local hard disk instead.

Once you have all the files extracted, copy \program files\BOINC\boincmgr.exe (and only that file) into your working BOINC installation - that'll be the program files directory, of course.

That should work, but as I said at the beginning, I haven't tested it myself with v6.6.4 - you might want to back up the existing (part-broken) manager before you start.

Using the 6.4.5 boincmgr here with Boinc 6.6.4 perfectly fine (Linux).

Rom has identified the problem so hopefully a fix will follow.

Just confirming Richards 'trick' does work on windows (x64) also. Exchanged the 6.6.4 manager with the 6.5 one and it works.

Hello Richard,

I tried this, using boincmgr 6.4.5 (64 bit) in a 6.6.4 installation (also 64 bit). When I start the boincmgr it says that its data directory is the directory where I had unpacked (using the /a option during install). Since there are no project related files in there (it just was a temporary folder) it concludes that I have no projects attached :-)

Do you (or anybody else) know of a way to tell it that its data directory is c:\BoincData ?

Regards,
John.

I found a quick and dirty way of dealing with this. Install 6.4.5 as usual, rename boincmgr.exe in the program directory to boincmgr645.exe. Then install 6.6.4, rename the new boincmgr.exe to boincmgr664.exe and then rename (or copy) the boincmgr645.exe to boincmgr.exe.

It works, and I can now see what boinc is doing. And that's not a pretty sight :-)

I'm trying to adjust my app_info.xml in such a way that it uses 4 cores and 2 cuda devices for multibeam (ak v8 optimized and 6.08 on cuda) and astropulse (optimized). I can now clearly see that I still haven't managed to do that :-)

Regards,
John.

I am using a self built version from the code base on Friday evening. I am not having this problem. I hope that means the fix is in place for the next build.

Now if the work fetch and CPU scheduler issues could be resolved. I have 2 completely dry machines that are not even attempting to fetch work from anywhere, and one machine that had 2 tasks available but nothing running (one task had failed download and that was apparently the one that BOINC wanted to run). The later machine is also downloading work only from the project that is MOST overworked (lowest LTD) instead of downloading work from other projects that are less over worked.

It is possible it's a problem with optimized applications, or at least applications using an anonymous platform file and their place in the plan_class.

That is true as I am not using any optimized project code, just a self built BOINC.exe.

I am running (should say was running) boinc 664 64bit, with cuda 608 and apv500r103 on windows 7 64bit amd9950.
when I changed my preferences (because I am running out of ap workunits) to download setiv603. after downloading 603 workunits the boinc mgr crashes.

in task manager everything is still running except boinc mgr. the crash sais 'the program is not responding'.

I can recreate the problem by running only cuda an ap without seti603, all runs fine, then downloading seti603 workunits and crashes again.

It also crashes if I run seti603akv8

I have switched to boinc 660 running cuda,apv500r103 and setiv603 with no problems. so far any way.
