hello, i am using BOINC 6.4.5 and i have a problem with it running sometimes even if i am using the computer even after preferences explicitly say it shouldn't be doing that (as explained in the title). it doesn't do it all the time, for example if i've just started BOINC it will say suspended and really be suspended, but if i let it 6 minutes (inactive time before processing starts) even after coming out from it (moving mouse), SOMETIMES it will remain working and i have to manually shut down BOINC in order to use my computer again. the job that does this is always SETI@home Enhanced 6.08 (cuda). I say 'sometimes' - usually if i let it run more then 4-5 hours. if i just let it run for a short period of time it will actually stop working as soon as i start using the computer. What could it be, ... how come it doesnt listen to the preferences. is it a bug? thanks |

You could say it's a bug, but it's more of a development oversight. When BOINC does CUDA and you suspend BOINC, the task in the GPU will continue to work, as BOINC doesn't keep track of what the GPU is doing. Not yet. That's being implemented in the next generation of BOINC. So as you noticed, the only way to stop a CUDA task with BOINC 6.4.5 is to stop BOINC and restart it. When suspended before you exit it, upon restart it will stay suspended until you tell it to continue. |

BOINC 6.4.5 (and above) is the version that enables Seti to do work on CUDA capable cards when they are found in the computer. You can disable the use of the GPU through your project preferences. Just set "Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available" to no (take the check mark off). Then save the changes to the web site and update the Seti project through BOINC Manager. Any work still detailed to your GPU on your computer will continue to run, but you will not get new work for the GPU after this. |
