Have you tried either resetting the project, or detaching and re-attaching?

I've been getting similar messages in my Message Logs (X#X#X used in place of the actual project ID):

Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Temporarily failed upload of X#X#X#X#X#_1_0 HTTP error
Backing off 3 hr 55 min 33 sec on upload of X#X#X#X#X#_1_0

And I have 15 Tasks showing 100% Progress waiting to Transfer.

I did an attach to Project - SETi@home per "Message 861616 - Posted 3 Feb 2009 14:12:03 UTC" and I still get the errors. I couldn't figure-out how to detach and re-attach per that same message. I am concerned that some of my Preferences may be set-up incorrectly for "network usage." Anyone know what a Macintosh Dual Intel Processor MacBook Pro should be set to for "network usage" to allow for proper communications and transfer of complete tasks?

Current setting:
Maximum download rate 400 KBytes/sec. Maximum upload rate 400 KBytes/sec.
Connect about every 0.0450 days Additional work buffer 0.03 days (max 10)
all other "network usage" blocks are blank...or maybe it's an issue with disk and memory usage instead?

Any suggestions / help for me so I can in turn help SETI and get these 15 completed Tasks submitted is welcomed!!!

Message 861704 - Posted: 4 Feb 2009, 0:21:11 UTC - in response to Message 861696.

purplehatjoan, Seti had its weekly outage today. After that it can take multiple hours to normalize as all hosts out there try to get new work, report old work. Do NOT reset or detach and reattach as long as you have work to report, as that will be irretrievably lost if you do so.

Each Tuesday Seti will go "off the air" for 4 to 6 hours, for their maintenance work. Just so you know.

BOINC on the other hand will try and retry to report the work. There shouldn't be anything you have to do about it. Eventually, it'll get through... if at least you do not have the same problem as the original poster has.

Thanks especially for the Tuesday maintenance news...On Tuesdays, I usually do a software update, virus scan, system OS update and verify disk permissions every Tuesday and so that's when I peek at BOINC to see how "my" SETI Tasks are going...I guess I use to check earlier in the day -->before<-- the maintenance and it so happened that this day I must of checked -->during<-- the maintenance. I'll check BOINC & SETI Tasks status tomorrow or Thursday to see if the reporting has begun or not and if not...I'll likely be back seeking help! Here's hoping I don't return!

Message 863739 - Posted: 9 Feb 2009, 8:00:11 UTC - in response to Message 861712.

My problem has nothing to do with the Tuesday thing. I have been a member of Seti@home for many years and understand the server schedules and the bottlenecking that happens on Tuesdays.
This particular problem I have now had for many months, and have not really bothered to fix it until now.

I have reset and/or re-attached the project many times; I have even loaded about 3 different versions of Boinc to see if that helps. I am now running the latest release of Boinc (6.2.18) and all other versions report the same errors.

I have only ever been able to connect once in the past 6 months and managed to download 4 work units and they have never been able to upload or report either.

I have no Proxy server settings or anything that could complicate my access to the server. All other internet access works fine, even secure sites etc.

I have no idea how to fix this?

My computer boots up everyday with Boinc, and if it does not make access I just quit it until the next day.

Today's server and database status are all running fine except for a few disabled splitters, so I know it is not from bottlenecking.

I just looked at your tasks list and it shows you had 5 WU - listed as "detached". If you are detaching and re-attaching frequently, it will dump any WU that you have. I don't think a "reset" will do that, though.

Are you running any other distributed computing projects? What are the relative resource share numbers for each project? Do you leave your computer on all the time, or only a few hours per day?

I think it will. I never tried it out, but BOINC wiki tells:
 Ifthe problem persists, use the BOINC Manager to 'reset' that project. This will erase any jobs in progress and start from scratch.

No, he isn't, according to the account page. And the client is requesting work, so it isn't a debt thing.

But there have been two tasks downloaded just today, despite those error messages.
@Lenroc: did those download completely or was the downloading interrupted?

Gruß,
Gundolf

There appears to be something wrong with the latest AP client - it downloads, errors out, then requests another... The status at http://fragment1.berkeley.edu:80/newcricket/grapher.cgi?target=/router-interfaces/inr-250/gigabitethernet2_3&ranges=d%3Aw&view=Octets shows the system is maxed out because of all this traffic. Hang in there; they'll get it fixed Monday morning.

Message 868981 - Posted: 24 Feb 2009, 10:28:19 UTC - in response to Message 863818.

2 Workunits? That's news to me. They did not show up in my Manager at all.

To answer some of the previous questions:

I used to run SETI/Boinc on 3 machines, not stop, all day, everyday. (No other distribution work at all.)
I moved to another company, so I stopped all Boinc activity on those machines and only had access to 1 machine at the new office. This is the machine that is giving me these troubles.

So my current sequence is: I boot up in the morning when I come in; Boinc is set to autostart; I let it run and see if it can connect; if it doenst - I just quit. I have forgotten to quit many times, and once actually got to download 5 workunits and they completed processing, but could never upload the results again. They were just sitting there until I eventually detached the project, re-installed Boinc and tried again (and again, and again). Those must be the 5 units you are talking about.

This is driving me nuts - I used to be quite a contender in processing units, and now I have fallen out of the "race"...

Okay, then that seem to be some "ghost units". That happens from time to time when the server connection is bad (which it is in your case :-).

With regard to your problem:

You could try switching from htt protocol version 1.1 to version 1.0. I know that the symptoms don't hint that way, but who knows?
To do so, you must create a text file named cc_config.xml in your BOINC data directory (if it doesn't exist already). The data directory is mentioned in the message tab of BOINC manager after a restart.
With a texteditor, enter (copy&paste) the following into that file:
<cc_config>
<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>
</cc_config>
There are no lower case 'L' characters in that code, only digits '1'. More information to cc_config you can find here.
In BOINC Manager (Advanced view) select menu 'Advanced->Read config file' to activate the new configuration.

If that doesn't help, there are several protocol/debug options you can switch on via cc_config.xml. Perhaps you (or someone here, if you post excerpts of your log) can get hints from that.

Gruß,
Gundolf

I've tried almost everything listed in this thread to fix my BOINC / SETi and I have NO work units - I get NO work units...my errors are as follows:

Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
Scheduler request failed: Server returned nothing (no headers, no data)
Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site.

Over and over again...I've reset project, I've suspended project and then Resumed, I detached and re=attached project, the only thing I was not able to do was to edit or create a file for a given folder on the computer, because that is where the item is on a Windows PC and I'm on a Macintosh.

I've been unable to process any SETI items since the beginning of March. I tried to remove BOINC and then re-install it, but it came up with my hishory, so I must not of found all the different files it had loaded in verious folders. I mean if the issue is with a corrupt piece of SETI/BOINC that's in some system folder somewhere, I haven't been able to locate it to delete it so when I restall that I get completely new pieces everywhere.

ANYWAY, has anyone got a clue on how to get my BOINC/SETI working again on my Macintosh so I can help search for intelligent life in the universe...'cause if I can't fixed this soon, I'm going to delete what I can find of BOINC again and not try to reload it and thus take away the computing power that my machine has to offer...

Sounds like you have a problem with a firewall, proxy or something else blocking Seti talking back to you. You are able to go out (Internet access OK), but things are not able to come back to you. Are you behind a firewall or proxy that is dropping inbound connections?

I'm not sure about Firewalls or Proxys...how do I check on these items? Are you telling me to check with my work's IT department to see if they have changed my internet access in some manner and see if they have a work around or some way to give permission for BOINC / SETI to communicate with my computer? Or what? I've been keeping my eye on the online help page and no one with Macintosh help has been online when I've been seeking help...unsure if we should carry-on a step-by step try to find out what's happening as a part of this forum.
