We seem to have gotten beyond the current period of high demand and back into a realm of working within our limited resources. Queues are filling or draining in a positive direction, albeit slowly. I did finally write a script to compute how many results passing through our validation queue are CUDA processed - currently roughly 3%. And speaking of that, I am now aware of the CUDA validation problems mentioned in other threads and I passed them along with screenshots, info, etc. to the proper authorities (i.e. Eric and Jeff). At this time of year I do a lot of prep for upcoming server projects without enacting anythying too crazy, lest I break anything that's currently working just fine. For example, I'm building more RAID mirror pairs on the workunit storage server, but won't actually add them until the new year. We added enough space yesterday to hold us over until then. I'm also cleaning up the lab, labelling spare parts, placing things in boxes, organizing dozens of O'Reilly books currently stored inefficiently in stacks, etc. We also tend to "store up for the winter" - at some point soon we'll pull up a bunch of data from HPSS to keep splitters happy until the new year. Thanks for all the holiday wishes/greetings, and please accept my likewise sentiments. For those thinking I'm going above and beyond the call of duty by working during vacation, don't give me too much credit. My vacation comes later. - Matt -- BOINC/SETI@home network/web/science/development person -- "Any idiot can have a good idea. What is hard is to do it." - Jeanne-Claude |

As always, thank you for the updates. And especially, thank you for explaining things in ways that even us not-so-technical folks can (sort of) understand. I guess that, ultimately, all we really want is for the servers to keep sending us work and you’ve done a heck of a job keeping things smoking at your end. And especially thanks for the pictures!!!! (Please sir, can we have some more?) Hope you and the significant other have a terrific Christmas. And if the servers go down over the next two days. . . Frak ‘em, enjoy your holiday. :) Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas. Albert Einstein |

If I run out of work, I run out, will then let the computer idle on it's Christmas vacation until it's fixed whenever that is. After 286 days of windows uptime, it deserves it!. Looks like I'm getting the same... I came home to find one PC was not reporting, with 25 WU's in "ready to report" mode. Very unusual for ANY of my machines. Manually updating resulted in a http error. A reboot did not help, nor did "Do network communication" The fault seemed to clear itself, but I'm not sure if the 25 reported WU's were actually counted by the server(s), as I didn't check my pending list, etc, before the backlog cleared. It looks like the usual IT thing: as soon as the staff go home, the system falls over. *ho hum* Merry Christmas, guys. Have a good holiday, you have earned it. |

Are you aware of the Cricket Graph monitor? It's very handy to monitor whether a comms problem might be on your end or if the servers are to blame... If you look at it, you can see when server traffic came to a dead stop....and when it came back up. In addition, you can see that right now, the bandwidth to the servers has been close to maxxed out since it came back up, so connecting to them can be very sporadic until things catch up a bit. Hi Kittyman :) And a very merry Christmas to you and the kitties! I have seen the cricket graph around the boards, (and thanks for reminding me of it) but I find it confusing, due to time zone differences. (I am heading to Boxing day when most of the rest of the world is still well and truly early Christmas morning to midday, for example.) Having said that, the cricket graph DOES show a serious dip. The issues I am seeing are doubtless affecting plenty of others, too. WU's are being uploaded sporadically, which historically means they will eventually clear. I am receiving no work, however, to replace the finished work. It looks like the usual application of patience will be needed. As I said: "It looks like the usual IT thing: as soon as the staff go home, the system falls over. *ho hum*" |

at some point soon we'll pull up a bunch of data from HPSS to keep splitters happy until the new year. how much data in terms of GB's will this be? i'm not sure if other people like this idea. it would be handy to know when a new set of data is inserted into the splitters. thanks in advance. i hope you all have a good Christmas and happy New Year |
