Hi, I recently bought an Acer Aspire One netbook as a second mobile computer and it has the Linpus Linux Lite OS installed on it. I've looked around at the various different installations for Linux based computers but I can't find one that will work on this particular OS. I know a netbook isn't the biggest number cruncher but I'd like to add another 1.6Ghz to the seti@home project. If anyone could help me out I'd be most grateful.

The offical BOINC client from boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php should work on every Linux distribution. Also the offical SETI@home application.

Whether its a good idea to run SETI@home on a netbook is another question.

It is diametrically opposed to what the gadgets intended function is supposed to be, i.e. as a low powered mobile second computer. Considering the obvious limitations of the hardware, particularly in the cooling department, I'd strongly urge that you reconsider.

I think, that the BOINC CPU throtteling would be helpfull to prevent overheating on such netbooks...

CPU throttling will kill WU's which is typically not what people want. And if it doesnt kill the WU it will cause it to be completed excruciatingly slowly.

I using CPU throtteling since it was tested in the Alpha state. I never had any problems nor crashed WU with the new 5.10.x BOINC clients.

It's great that you use throttling. However buy using that you greatly increase the turn around time for WU's I'm not a major credit HO but you aren't helping yourself by throttling your CPU cycles while running Seti

No. The turmaround times increasing by the rate of the CPU throtteling value. For example 50 % CPU throtteling = double crunching times.

The WU turn around time is completely irrelevant if your computer is going to overheat getting there.

see this post about what happens due to CPU throttling. This is very common and just because 1 person doesnt have that problem doesn't mean it exists

And you compare here Windows and Unix ?
I never had here any big issues from any users in the Mac and Unix forums with this issue you like refereing with recent BOINC client. There was a issue with the old BOINC client, but this is still fixed...

I don't think there will be any problems with overheating. The Intel Atom processor is very low power, even the IGP chipset uses more power! So let the processor crunch and put the display into sleep mode will use less power than surfing through the web.

Heat????? I set up a small cooling pad for the days the temp goes over 70F. The rest of the timeit hovers at about 45-52C with no cooling pad. I do run CPU at 80% most of time and on weekends 100%, only QMC gives me trouble. I don't SETI so can't give info there. I am also not running linux on this or my Atom 330- winduhs 7 for both of those machines.

I've tried it, and it works. Just use the shell script install and then start the client from the commandline.

However... It is too slow on the atom to be worthwhile. Also, the fan runs continuously and is rather noisy.

The atom processor is good for low power operation. However, it is badly inefficient at number crunching. You get far more WUs per kWh from a recent desktop machine.
