Nothing really, BOINC 6 made this new account to run BOINC with. Whenever a new account is made in Windows, Windows will make those folders in the documents and settings\ folder. Not sure if you can remove them without trouble, though. |

You might ask "Why does Boinc 6 create it's own user account on my computer". The short answer is Security. Since Boinc is open source software, anyone is allowed to use its server software to create their own project without oversight by the Boinc developers. This left Boinc users open to the possibility that some malicious person could create a project that on the surface might seem, for example, to be searching for a cure for cancer but could surreptitiously be mining the users personal information. To my knowledge this has not yet happened, but it's better to be safe than sorry. By running Boinc under its own limited privilege account all the Boinc based projects are only allowed to read and write information in the Boinc Data folder. This limits any damage such a rogue project could do to the user and to the reputation of the Boinc community as a whole. Boinc V7.2.42 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470 |
