Running ver 6.2.19 on XP Pro AMD 64 dual core 4200+. With this ver of BOINC, and 2 diffeent older vers, task mgr "performance graph" shows cpu hitting 70% to 98% steadily. This is causing erratic mouse pointer and scratchy sound. Have to cut cpu usage back to 10% to stop the erratic behavior. This happens ONLY while running BOINC. Google hasn't brought up anything pertinent to this problem. Anyone out here have any ideas as to what is causing this?

Usually slowdowns are due to a lack of RAM, but since this is a fairly new ocmputer, that should probably not be it. However, just to be complete, how much RAM do you have instaled?

[edit]

Which projects are running when you notice the slow down. SOme projects take much more memory than others.

You should be able set the CPU usage to 100% with no trouble. You have 2GB of RAM, so that's not the problem.

BOINC is set to the lowest priority, so that all other programs can use the CPU when they need to. Maybe you have other applications that are fighting for the low-priority spot along with BOINC.

According to your account info, you have two identical computers. Does the problem happen on both? You may have one that has something failing in the hardware.

The Intel 2.6 is running independently at another location. Problem originated long after the other computer started, has caused no problems.

I don't have any indication of hardware problems. Have ample cooling. Twin 80 gig hard drives run by RAID Striping and WINFAST MB. All are relatively new. (1 year.)

There's a good chance there's something going on with both those pc's looking at the errors they're generating. This doesn't seem to be just affecting your mouse and sound, but the ability of the pc's to complete the WU's. May not be hardware on both, but I'd wouldn't be surprised to find there's at least one. Have you run any memory test, what are the temps of them, and have you OC'd them?

Look at your account info here. It shows two identical computers.

Anyway, the errors in your work units on one of the identical computers shows that it's having problems with the verification image. If it can't verify the files, it will continue to error out. This is with the standard Enhanced 6.03 app.

The other identical computer has two completed units using the 2.4 optimized app, with the CPU speed at 5380MHz??

That changes from WU to WU on that one.

and have you OC'd them?

I'd say there's a good chance.
Wouldn't surprise me if it's the same on the other as well.

Was running enhanced, but took it out yesterday and am running just 6.2.19 as it is. Was overclocked, but ran it back to 2.2 G about 2 or 3 weeks ago. Will have to get help to check memory temp. I just disabled Spyware Blaster, and the problem is much reduced. Increased cpu usage to 90% still had a bit of trouble with [pointer and sound.) Reduced this to 75% and problem is virtually gone. Will run a while like this and see what happens. Thanx for the good advice to all. I'll be back if it isn't cured.

Using the throtle function with multi-processor systems can cause errors too. You might be better off putting it back to 100% and set On multiprocessor systems, use at most "1" processor.

Use at most 1 processor is ignored by 6.x. You have to use use at most X% of processors.

Thanks for the info, didn't realize they changed that.

I corrected the error that showed me using 2 identical machines, and changed computer to "1 processor." String of errors probably caused by when I deleted all of BOINc to get rid of the extra KWSN_2.4V programs I was using. Had to reinstall BOINC and start from scratch to get it working with 6.2.19 "as-is." When SETI was downloading WU's, the downloads kept "failing" and I guess SETI was uploading them as errors. Reached maximum of 58 "turn-ins," and had to wait until the next day before I was able to get downloads without any errors. I'm still trying to find out if I can get the memory temp in this machine.

If they're hot to the touch they're too hot. They tend to get hotter when you OC too. If you don't have software already, you could get something like speedfan to tell you the cpu and sys temps too. If you're going to OC you should take precautions to make sure you're not running any of it too hot. Heat issues can cause errors too.
Are you still having trouble with how the pc responds now?

I changed "computer preferences\use at most 2 processors" to 1 processor and usage to 100%. Erratic pointer and scratchy sound are now gone. I guess SETI was getting upset looking for that other processor I suggested. Thanks y'all!
