Hi folks! As the NYTimes has rightly pointed out, the work of the two Japanese physicists is based upon previous research by Nicola Cabibbo of Rome. In the CKM matrix the first C means Cabibbo and it is an extension on the Cabibbo angle which goes back to 1963. As it always happens with Nobel prizes, some exclusions from the prize are difficult to understand, as it happens this year with the exclusion of Robert Gallo from the medicine prize relative to the discovery of the HIV virus.
