If you choose your projects based on granted credit and have a recent nvidia based graphics card or have a Sony PS3, then you can't go past http://www.ps3grid.net/. On my Q9450 machine with a 9600GT graphics card, for a day of crunching on the graphics card I get 3,200 credits and that's while three cores of the quad are still crunching other projects. The only catch is that you need to run a development version of BOINC (6.3.11) to allow the GPU to be recognised. There is a way to get all cores plus the GPU crunching but I haven't tried it yet....WOW! Just imagine setting the machine up with 2 graphics cards plus the quad on optimised SETI! A combinded RAC of over 10,000 could easily be had, hmmmmm I might have to try it! Live long and BOINC! Paul (S@H1 8888) And proud of it! |

Hi Gas Giant. I tried it on my quad (Geoforce 8500GT)sometime ago, but kept getting "no work available for your platform". Will 6.3.11 change this? & if so, is 6.3.11 stable enough? |

Hi I downloaded and it is up and running but I have only 4 WU crunching right now and it did see my CUDA card how do I get it to crunch 4 cpu core and 1 gpu core at the same time? |

Hi Hi Will I have to reset project this is what is found. "9/25/2008 12:29:08 AM||CUDA devices found 9/25/2008 12:29:08 AM||Coprocessor: Device Emulation (CPU) (1)" But I am crunching 4 WU on my CPU my GPU is not crunching. |

I have a core 2 quad running this right now along with a 8800GT - I don't see where/how to enable the GPU to crunch SETI work units..... What am I missing? |

Sorry folks....busy day at w#$^! You can continue to display graphics while running ps3grid (gpugrid) but it does get a little 'jerky'. It is recommended to suspend ps3grid while gaming or doing graphics intensive operations. I haven't been able to get all four cores plus one gpu running at the same time. So far I'm running ps3grid on my gpu and 3 cores are active on other projects, leaving 1 core semi-idle. You just download and install 6.3.11 (appears stable) and attach to ps3grid. You need to make sure you have the latest "cuda" downloaded and installed - I had to uninstall the previous nvidia drivers first, otherwise it went into continual resets every time windows booted up. Ps3grid will only run if you have a compatible nvidia based gpu card. |

Hi PaulDHarris, If you get this message "Device Emulation", this usually means you don't have the right driver loaded, or that your card isn't supported by the latest CUDA driver. PS3GRID (and Nvidia) recently moved to using CUDA version 2, and some older cards (including some of the 8800 series!) only support CUDA v1 and aren't supported to run PS3/GPUGRID. I'd check the forums at PS3GRID. They have a sticky post that highlights which cards don't/might/will work. Mark |

The only catch is that you need to run a development version of BOINC (6.3.11) to allow the GPU to be recognised.A word of caution While 6.3.11 was "meant" to enable CPU+GPU crunching, it has proved a tad troublesome and most GPUGrid users (but not all) have gone back to 6.3.10 It works for some but not for most :/ Use at your own risk |

Thanks I will check it out to see. Mine is considered too slow it is 1.1 cuda project needs cuda 2 |

Check out the GPUGrid follow the link to download the bonic client and Nvidia CUDA drivers. On the configuration screen of the BOINC installer click on the "Advanced" button and uncheck the checkbox called "Protected application execution". If you still have problems after that, please post the first few lines of the messages tab after you started BOINC. 26/09/2008 19:35:45||CUDA devices found 26/09/2008 19:35:45||Coprocessor: GeForce 8800 GT (1) Once you have your GPU recognised like above, even if you don't have a GPU based project, you should see a slight increase in processing of your WU's, as your GPU will be used as a coprocessor. See my posted question on the subject of CUDA Devices. The project I was asking about was SETI. Q6600 @ 2.40GHz Vista Ultimate x64 SP1 Mem: 4GB 8800GT 181.22 BOINC 6.6.3 Win64 ACTIVE PROJECTS |

Thanks I now have my video card recognized see below from my BOINC messages 9/26/2008 8:17:22 PM||CUDA devices found 9/26/2008 8:17:22 PM||Coprocessor: GeForce 8600 GT (1) So I should see an increase in my WU speed I am running 6.3.10 and 6.3.11 does not find any CUDA devices Bye Paul |

It will be only a slight increase, for me it was about 4-10 minutes less time spent on a work unit. So for me, it means I can process and extra 8-16 more a day when just working on seti work units. But as I run 6 projects, including GPUGrid...just knowing that when my GPU is not processing GPUGrid WU's... Well I guess you can understand... Yeah I understand it is in a way like a 5%+/- increase of WU processing or speed up without an over clock so I still crunch a WU per CPU core but it just speeds them up some. So when SETI starts to use GPU there will be a WU being done by each CPU core and a WU for each GPU core. Since SETI does not use GPU cores - the CUDA driver and the BOINC 6.3.10 app will speed up my quad in processing the work units it co processes the WUs thus speeding them up. |

Okay So for now PS3GRID only with 6.3.10 I guess I got to excited thinking I could crunch SETI with CPU and GPU. I guess the CUDA v2 driver along with the BOINC app 6.3.10 will not process any extra WU but it helps the CPU as a co-processor I guess? |

You can process PS3GRID on the GPU and SETI on the CPU with no problems. I don't believe any other BOINC project uses the GPU yet. I'd also use the ncpu+1 work around for now to ensure you still utilise all your cores..... |

I've been looking into GPU crunching as well. I tried Folding @ Home-GPU, but it does use up some CPU time. Doesn't this just slow down other BOINC projects? |
