...There are even those who suggest humanity should collectively decide to turn away from some new technologies as inherently dangerous....

I think it is the same issue as handling/producing weapons/shotguns/nuclear arsenal and so on...at the end it is up to us what we do with it, how we decide to use them. A coin has always two sides.
