Question for seti staff if a duo core cpu run's out off units leaveing only 1 core running can you garentee this will not cause the cpu to heat up unevenly and therefore reduce the life of the cpu , or cause the cpu to burn out as this is my biggest fear .If you can garantee this will not happen i will no longer complain about not getting new units .Refear to post about not getting units and seti progect treating users with contempt |

Yes, it probably will cause the CPU to heat unevenly, but no it will not cause the CPU to burn out (assuming the machine is built to proper cooling specs). CPUs are designed and tested by the manufacturer to run at 100% to ensure stability and quality (after all, they have no idea where the CPU will end up or how it will be used). There have been no reports done of CPUs burning out after being used 100% of the time, or if used "unevenly" (though dual core CPUs are still relatively new so reports are still low and only time will truly tell). Regardless of how many cores, CPUs simply do not burn out as long as proper cooling is used. |

Refear to post about not getting units and seti progect treating users with contempt You keep saying this, but where exactly does it say that Seti should at all times have work? May I point you to rules and policies which states You may want to consider participating in one or more of these projects. By doing so, your computer will do useful work even when SETI@home has no work available for it. How about treating the project with the same courtesy as you expect them to treat you? |

...if a duo core cpu run's out off units leaveing only 1 core running can you garentee this will not cause the cpu to heat up unevenly and therefore reduce the life of the cpu , or cause the cpu to burn out as this is my biggest fear... First - No one can guarantee anything. Just turning your computer on reduces its life expectancy. Second - CPU manufacturers build processors for a 10-year life cycle. This is far longer than the replacement interval of the average family's desktop computer. Third - Normal operation (yes, running SETI@home qualifies as normal operation) is highly unlikely to cause CPU failure. Some things that could cause CPU failure: overclocking, CPU cooler failure, lightning strike or other power spike, etc. Cruiser Gateway GT5692 L-f-S Edition -Phenom X4 9650 CPU -4GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM -500GB SATA HD -Vista x64 SP1 -BOINC 6.2.19 32-bit client -SSE3 optimized 32-bit apps |

Second - CPU manufacturers build processors for a 10-year life cycle. This is far longer than the replacement interval of the average family's desktop computer. ...and that 10 year life cycle is a lot like the "6 month" life expectancy of the Mars Rovers: purposely short to keep expectations low. Several years later, they are still working great. This is the same reason why some people still have 386s or earlier processors still working for their needs even though those processors have been around for 25 years and longer. |

There are two exceptions to the picture of CPU life expentancy running BOINC, and they are both related. Laptops and the really small format computers that use laptop components quite often do not have sufficient cooling to run at 100% CPU usage for long periods of time. The problem is a design tradeoff. You trade the small size and light weight of the laptop by putting in much smaller fans and packing everything closer together. Almost all full sized desktop computers have enough cooling unless the dust has built up inside of them too badly. BOINC WIKI |

and no matter, download SPEEDFAN and you can see in what temperature your´e processors cores are running, mine is running 63 celsius and it is running all the time at 100% and it is laptop. no extra cooling or anything |
