I have BOINC running on one of my boxes (a dual, AMD MP 2800+) and I was running BOINC GUI with S@H and LHC (50%/50%) for a few days with no problems. Following advice from one of S@H participants, I wanted to try the CLI BOINC ("boinc_cli.exe"). I unloaded the GUI and started the CLI client. Things were going on AOK for a few hours, and then I stopped watching the computer - which apparently was a bad idea....:) The next morning the box was frozen solid. Had to reset. Of course, GIU kicked in, but all of my WUs (the one that I had in cache and the ones that were "ready to report") were gone. BOINC actually started d/loading new WUs from LHC, and when S@H fixed their servers from S@H a few hours later. Also, when I looked at both LHC and S@H web-sites, I noticed that I have dual computer records for the one box I am running BOINC on. Seems that a new record was created, and this is the one that is receiving credits, the old one is dormant from that point on. Well, no problem, I thought, I can merge the two on both S@H and LHC web-sites. To no avail. When I try to merge them I am NOT presented with a list of computers to choose from by check-boxes, as one would expect. Three questions: 1. is "boinc_cli.exe" a valid alternative to GUI under WIN XP SP #2? 2. any idea on what "ate" my cached WUs and the ones that were "ready to report"? 3. what is going on with the dual computer records for my one machine? Cheers! -mm- |

I have had two boxes running the cli under Win XP SP2 for quite some time without any problems, and know of many others as well. I have had no reason to believe that there is any inherent problem with the cli and Win XP. Not sure at all about the dissappearing WUs, sorry. I have heard of several other people wind up with two records for the same machine but, AFAIK, they were able to merge them successfully. Sorry I can't be of any more assistance. I'm sure others will be along that will have more insight. |

Some thoughts on your problems. 1) I think anything earlier than CCv4.09 has incompatible methods of determining if BOINC is already running. If 2 instances of BOINC run at the same time it will most likely corrupt work. 2) If the client_state.xml file gets corrupted it will lose all work on hand and create a new host record. It sounds like you had #1 cause #2. John Keck -- BOINCing since 2002/12/08 -- |
