Message 803063 - Posted: 29 Aug 2008, 10:18:00 UTC

I recently built another rig with just a hard drive required. I had plenty low capacity ones but wanted to put a sata2 one in. As I had none spare, pinched a 250gb from my workstation which wasn't in use yet.

Problem was that boinc was on it, so copied it over to another drive(F).

Did not find anything wrong until the dreaded MS updates caused a reboot & boinc manager failed to run stating that the drive/network drive is missing. Reinstalled boinc thinking that it would repair it but no joy, it still states the same on reboot.

Am currently thinking about waiting until all wu's processed then uninstall/reinstall. However, as it keeps stating that boinc should be on the D drive, does anyone know where this can be changed to show the correct drive? Have clicked on the shortcut, gone to properties & tried changing it there but it won't accept it. O/S is Vista.

B, not being an expert on all things Vista, I may well be wrong.

I thought all programme files had to be on the main boot drive?

Asides from the O/S & some programs that won't install anywhere except C:, you can install programs anywhere you like. Had this been an XP problem, I could resolve it easily, but still not up to speed on Vista.

The first screen after the validation screen shows you the default settings for the c: drive

BOINC Configuration Screen
Shows current settings.

is a advance button which allows you to change settings.

On vista the data settings are hidden.

Installation Wizard.

Customize installation options?

C:\Program Files\BOINC\ -------- Change Button

C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ -------- Change Button

Could try installing 6.2.18 Direct to your new drive from this Screen.

I'm not convinced that its a Vista problem. More likely its an obscure reference or references in some XML file in your BOINC folder, such as your client_state.xml.

Neither client_state.xml nor any other .xml file holds the BOINC (Data) directory link. It is stored in the registry, though, at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup

Thanks Ageless, that did the trick.

Another possible issue.....

In the past, when problems have cropped up on a host, used Richard Haselgrove's tip of transferring boinc to a pen drive & run it off that.

With the new versions of boinc splitting main & data into 2 different directories, what is the procedure for copying to pen drive & ensuring that it'll run?

Good question.

The easiest way would probably be to equip yourself with a "bare" BOINC v5 installation (i.e. a folder with the BOINC executables in it, but never connected to a project), then copy the contents of the problematic BOINC data folder (including subfolders) into it and run as before.

If you're going to finish off tasks on a machine that's already got BOINC v6 on it, then you're probably going to have to do a registry hack:

*** Warning: untried, untested ***

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Space Sciences Laboratory, U.C. Berkeley\BOINC Setup]
"DATADIR"="D:\\BOINCdata\\"

- having backed up the DATADIR key so you can restore the status quo ante, of course.

Edit: the easiest way to create that "bare" v5 BOINC folder is to use the "/a" (administrative install) switch on the BOINC installer of your choice. It'll talk about installing to a network location, but you can choose your own folder - just make sure it's a separate working folder, don't overwrite your standard install in Program Files by mistake!

If in both places you have BOINC installed on the system, you only copy the data directory to the pen-drive and change the registry entry for the data directory path.

Otherwise, I don't think you can. Not for Windows at least. (Linux and Mac may still be possible)

Thanks Richard & Ageless. It's only happened a couple of times where I had to use a pen drive. Have pasted your answers to notepad so that I'll have it handy in emergency.

I upgrade to Bonic windows v6.2.18 and had two problems on my computer running Windows Vista Home Premium OS.

The first was the program when ran in the Admin account ignored my preference setting of using only 3 of my 4 processors and ran on all 4 unlike version v5.10 which honor my preferences.

The second problem was that I could not run the program in my users account. When I tried to run it in the users account I got the error message that I needed to add the account to bonic_users group.

I went back to the admin account to do that task but found out that because I was on Windows Vista Home Premium OS I could not access the program to do that very task.

Here is the text from the Windows Help

"Add a user account to a group

By adding a user account to a group, you can avoid having to grant the same access and permission to many different users one by one. Members of a group can make the same types of changes to settings and have the same access to folders, printers, and other network services.

Note
These steps cannot be completed on Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium."

I have reinstalled Bonic 5.10 at this time.

Good move :-) I'm sticking to 5.10.45 after reading about the problems people are having with the 6.* versions. The old one suits me just fine.

Regards,
John.

Not sure if this is a boinc issue. Just noticed a dialogue box stating that "boinc has stopped working". On clicking ok, a further dialogue box cropped up stating "the application failed to initialise(0xc0000006)".

On googling, found several answers regarding network shares/storage/exception in page error.

Did what was advised - rebooted - same problem.

Is this a problem with 6.2.18 or Vista?

6.2.18

Still happening. That makes 4 days on the trot. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

A reboot solves problem, but should not have to reboot. Server & XP rigs have 6.2.18 & no problems, so it's got to be a problem with Vista/6.2.18.
